Shopping local is a breeze in Downtown Suffolk
Downtown Suffolk gives residents easy access to shopping, dining and historical sites. This city center lies 20 miles west of Chesapeake and has small local businesses and restaurants lining the streets. Suffolk is also the home of the first Planters peanut processing plant. The historic district features historic homes like the Truitt House, a mansion that’s been standing since 1909. Residents can see the city’s history within the old buildings and enjoy modern features like coffee shops, bars and retail stores. Ryan Harrell, an experienced Realtor with The Real Estate Group, says, “I grew up here, and it’s grown over the years. You get the creature comforts and amenities of bigger cities without huge crowds of people.”
Small businesses thrive on North Main Street
Washington Street runs through the heart of Downtown Suffolk City. Locals walk the wide sidewalks to shop at the Treasured Memories consignment shop or Stephanie’s Fashion Boutique. North Main Street has a variety of dining options, including The Plaid Turnip, Brighter Day Café and Harper’s Table. But that’s just a taste of the restaurants locals can enjoy downtown. There are plenty of cafes, sit-down restaurants and bars to visit. The Suffolk Visitor Center Pavillion hosts a farmers market throughout the year. Residents can shop there to get fresh produce in the summer and Christmas treats in the winter.

Three-bedroom homes cheaper than those in Chesapeake
Single- and multi-family homes fill the downtown area. A remodeled shotgun home with two bedrooms might sell for $200,000. Future homeowners might find a brand-new national-style home with three bedrooms for $350,000. “People move here to get bigger homes for less than you would spend in other cities,” says Harrell. Most homes have been standing since the early 1900s and 1960s. “There are lots of people moving here to buy homes, but new multi-family and rental buildings are being built,” says Harrell.

Nutty for peanuts
Suffolk celebrates being the peanut capital of the world with the annual Suffolk Peanut Fest in October. The first festival was held in 1941, and it’s been a crowd-pleaser ever since. Residents drive down Carolina Road to hop on carnival rides, eat tasty treats or compete in the peanut butter sculpting contest. For more laidback fun, residents visit the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts to catch a live show. Visitors might see a musical, hear the local orchestra or watch a play. The Suffolk Center also hosts their annual Suffolk Plein Air Festival to display unique pieces from artists around the country.
Easy streams on Nansemond River
When locals want a relaxing day on the water, they visit Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina. Residents visit to go kayaking or canoeing along the Nansemond River. “The Wharf puts on the TGIF Summer Concert series every year,” says Harrell. “Different bands play live music down by the river.” Peanut Park has a baseball and softball field open for young athletes to swing for the fences. Further down the road is Planters Park. Here, kids can climb around on the playground equipment or soar on the swings.

Getting around with Suffolk Transit
Wide concrete sidewalks line the streets in Downtown Suffolk City. If residents don’t want to walk or bike around town, public buses run throughout the city to take locals all over Suffolk. The sidewalks around the homes are narrow but still provide a walking path for those who want to get their steps in. Most residents park their cars on the street because not every home features a driveway. If a home does have a driveway, it often provides uncovered parking for the homeowner. “The area has a slower pace than nearby cities like Chesapeake,” says Harrell. “If you want to leave your area and drive back roads, it’s easy to do. We also have less people, so there’s not as much traffic to deal with.”
