Sugarcreek Township is a secluded community with access to the city
Sugarcreek residents tend to value peace and quiet and outdoor activities. This secluded community in Kittanning, Pa., is outside Pittsburgh and bordered by the scenic Allegheny River. Roughly an hour north of Pittsburgh, city amenities are within reach, but more space and privacy are in this suburb’s DNA. "It's very rural, so there isn't a lot of real estate, period," says Joan Sorce, Realtor at RE/MAX Select Realty and frequent Sugarcreek visitor, says since the area is rural, "there isn't a lot of real estate, period." Although rural, Sugarcreek is the largest community in Venango County, Pa. With locations around 20 minutes away, the nearby school district and healthcare system account for a substantial portion of Sugarcreek's labor force. Sorce adds that drives outside of the community can be convenient with highway access 20 minutes away, which routes commuters directly into the city.

Many homes are surrounded by woods
Housing styles vary in this community, with colonial revivals, ranch-style, log cabins, lofts, farmhouses and cottages with housing costs sitting between $260,000 and $378,000. “There’s a mix of styles and sizes,” says Sandy Bracken, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. More than 80% of residents own their properties and many homes are surrounded by wooded areas. “Everyone here knows everyone,” says Bracken. “It is a progressive, outgoing community. It’s a tight-knit area.” The CAP Index crime score for the area is 1 out of 10, below the national average of 4 and the lowest possible score. Ironically, Kittanning was used as the set for the FX show "Justified," which chronicles the adventures of a US Marshals Service deputy. With routes 322 and 62 cutting through the lower half of the community, this outer borough is a driving town with picturesque pastureland commutes.

Allegheny River is a popular recreation source
After school, the kids head to Sugarcreek Community Park. The park’s disc golf course is popular with the locals. The park has a little bit for all outdoor enthusiasts — ball fields, a playground and a social hall. The social hall occasionally has concerts, says Bracken. The Allegheny River is also a source of outdoor recreation. Residents can camp, fish, boat and hunt — all popular activities for residents, Bracken says. In their spare time, locals can also visit the numerous hiking spots nearby.

Paradise Park has a rich history
Sorce recommends heading to Paradise Park for events and live music. Paradise Park has a rich history of hosting iconic country music legends, such as Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Hank Williams Jr. and Waylon Jennings. The Sugarcreek Volunteer Fire Department holds two of the area’s biggest events that raise money for the organization: a ladies' night and a firearms auction.
