Sugarcreek’s Amish culture and small-town appeal
Thousands of tourists make their way to Sugarcreek each year, where they can admire the giant-sized cuckoo clock, taste locally made Swiss cheese and experience Amish culture. “People refer to it as the gateway to Amish country, because it’s at the edge of one of the largest Amish settlements in the world,” says Steven Maag, a Realtor with Kaufman Realty & Auctions who has lived in the area for more than 50 years. “The hospitality industry is huge.” Despite the thousands of visitors each year, many residents have multigenerational ties to the community, and the promise of small-town living holds an appeal for some newcomers as well. “People move here because they’re tired of the rat race of city life, and they’re familiar with Sugarcreek because they’ve visited.”

Housing variety in Sugarcreek
Along the gridded streets near downtown, early 1900s bungalows and American Foursquares rest behind maple-shaded sidewalks. These properties sometimes have detached garages or driveways along the alleys, and lots tend to be smaller than a quarter acre. Farther from the center, sidewalks are less common, and buyers might find vinyl-sided Cape Cods, manufactured homes and brick ranch-style houses. In general, home prices within the village tend to fall between $150,000 and $410,000. There are a few post-2000 condos in the Heritage Crossing subdivision, one of which sold in early 2025 for around $220,000. Owners also pay about $150 in monthly HOA fees. Outside the village, a patchwork of farms stretches in every direction, and houses with an acre or more of land often sell from $170,000 to $600,000. After heavy rains, flooding is possible along creeks and other waterways, so some lenders may require flood insurance. Sugarcreek has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Garaway 7-12 earns a B, and it has a strong performing arts program with concerts and plays throughout the school year. Some families choose to homeschool or send their children to private schools, such as Sand Hill School or Stony Point School. Both offer first through eighth grades and are affiliated with the Amish community.

From Amish homestyle cooking to buying produce at auctions
One of Sugarcreek’s most well-known dining spots is The Dutch Valley Restaurant, which serves Amish homestyle cooking. Tourists come to the restaurant by the busload, and community members regularly eat there as well. Bags Sports Pub, on East Main Street, offers sandwiches and burgers, and Collective Coffee Co. is a popular spot to get specialty lattes and other beverages.
Swiss Village Bulk Foods and Riesbeck’s are Sugarcreek’s grocery stores. Holmes Lumber sells a full range of home-building and hardware supplies, and Carlisle Fabric & Quilts stocks sewing supplies. “The village has pretty much everything people need, but there aren’t bigger box stores or a Walmart,” Maag says. “For those, people usually go to Dover or New Philadelphia.” Locals can buy everything from livestock and fresh produce to homes at the auction houses around the area. “Auctions are also a big social event,” Maag says. “People come to watch even if they aren’t buying anything.”

Celebrating Swiss culture and vintage cars
The Ohio Swiss Festival brings thousands of people to downtown Sugarcreek each September. The three-day festival is packed with activities celebrating Swiss heritage, including parades and a yodeling contest, as well as beer and cheese tastings. In June, the village hosts the Fabulous ‘50s Fling, an event focused on vintage vehicles. “If the weather’s good, you could have 300 or more cars,” Maag says.

Nearby services and sharing the road with buses, buggies and bikes
State routes 39 and 93 intersect in Sugarcreek, and both are two lanes. Cars often share the roads with tourist buses, horse-drawn buggies and electric bikes, so “drivers need to be aware and cautious,” Maag says. Freight trains also pass through the community, which can cause traffic congestion in the village. The closest emergency room is just over 10 miles east, at the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover. The Akron-Canton Airport, about 40 miles north, offers direct flights to more than 20 cities.
