Summitville is a commuter town with small-town character
Summitville is a one-stoplight town on the north side of Madison County. Named for being the highest elevation point between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, it is a popular bedroom community for those looking to commute to larger cities. “We are an old-school small American town where kids go outside to play and everybody knows everybody,” says town council president Steve Conrad. “A lot of bigger cities try to recreate that sense of security, but we have it all natural.” Summitville is within 30 minutes of Muncie, Anderson and Marion, but has a more rural atmosphere and a lower cost of living.

Rural homes with a chance to own land
A good portion of Summitville's homes were built from 1890 to 1930, often in the National Folk architectural style. From 1940 to 1980, more properties were added, typically in ranch-style designs. Only the streets near the town center have sidewalks, and the whole area has a rural feel, with large yards and views of distant farmland. Buyers can find smaller homes or properties needing major renovations from $30,000 to $70,000. From $150,000 to $250,000, houses are typically move-in ready, many with an acre or more of land. For those looking to own more than 2 acres, prices are usually between $350,000 and $400,000.

Summitville Elementary is a central part of the community
Summitville Elementary School is located at the heart of town and serves pre-kindergarten through second grade. It receives a B-minus grade from Niche. The school is an active part of the community, with family game nights and a free summer food program to provide meals to kids under 18. On the Fourth of July, the school’s parking lot fills with residents and visitors ready to watch the town’s fireworks display. Older kids head out of town to Park Elementary School, rated C-plus, for third through sixth grade. Madison-Grant Junior/Senior High School serves seventh through 12th grade and is rated B-minus.

Limited dining and a new Dollar General moving in
Residents of Summitville who wanted to see a restaurant in their hometown opened Hoosier Routes in 2022. The cozy establishment is known for its house-smoked barbecue and hand-breaded tenderloin. Across the street, the town’s only other restaurant is a Pizza King, a popular chain for quick takeout. In 2024, the city’s central convenience store and gas station, Circle K, was closed for structural issues. “We are working on getting a new gas station, and there's a Dollar General coming in,” Conrad says. “People are looking forward to having a grocery store nearby, because right now the closest one is 5 miles away in Alexandria.” The Dollar General is expected to open in the fall of 2025.

The small town center has a park, a library and several churches
In addition to the elementary school and restaurants, the town center of Summitville has a fire and police department, a post office, and a small park with a pavilion and ball field. There’s also the Ralph E. Hazelbaker Library, which has children's story time and adult book clubs. Some residents find community at the local churches, and The Hope Center runs a food pantry for anyone in need. The town is usually pretty quiet, with a railroad track that’s not very active. “The train only passes through once or twice in a day, and sometimes it’s days before you see another one,” Conrad says.

A bedroom community halfway between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis
Summitville is located just off Interstate 69, which connects north to Fort Wayne and south to Indianapolis. It’s about 70 miles to either, usually just over an hour in the car. Both major cities have an international airport. It’s just over 10 miles to reach Elwood, which has the closest hospital, and around 20 miles to reach Marion, Muncie and Anderson. All four cities have major employers and big-brand shopping options. “We are a bedroom community,” Conrad says. “Lots of people live here and then commute into work.”
