Crosswell
Neighborhood in Sumter, South Carolina
Sumter County 29150
“Affordable homes” built between the 1930s and ‘60s
U.S. Route 15 splits Crosswell into two residential sections. Homes on the neighborhood’s west side date back to the 1930s and feature minimal updates. Across the street, most of the houses were built between the 1950s and ‘60s. They have renovated interiors, with new wood floors and modern kitchens. On both sides of the neighborhood, properties typically reflect Minimal Traditional ranch-style architecture. “One of Crosswell’s biggest draws is its affordability,” Tobias says. Older investment properties cost between $15,000 and $60,000, while recently remodeled homes range from about $100,000 to $175,000.Homemade soul food at the Korner Shak
Main Street is a direct throughway to Sumter’s downtown district. It has a collection of brick-and-mortar stores, local restaurants and casual breweries. A couple of hot spots are hidden throughout Crosswell, too. Korner Shak serves home-cooked soul food at the end of Moore Street. Genuine Flava is another hole-in-the-wall restaurant best known for its smothered pork chops and fried oxtail. Family Dollar and Dollar General border Lafayette Drive, and Piggly Wiggly sits right down the road.New basketball courts at Crosswell Drive Park
Narrow sidewalks make it easy to access Crosswell Drive Park. Situated across from Crosswell Elementary, the park has a loop walking track, a central playground and a gazebo. It added three new basketball courts in 2022, thanks to city officials. Another basketball court and playground are less than a mile west at Riley Park. The focal point here is a 90-year-old ballpark, originally home to Sumter’s minor league baseball teams. The stadium underwent major renovations in 2024, and today, it hosts local college baseball games and the American Legion P-15’s team.Lafayette Drive cuts through Crosswell
Crosswell residents have easy access to three of the main highways in Sumter. U.S. Route 15, or Lafayette Drive, cuts through the neighborhood and leads straight downtown. The city’s only full-service medical center and dozens of local businesses are located here. U.S. Highway 401 is another easy way to get downtown. It intersects with U.S. Highway 378 before continuing north to the rural outskirts of town. U.S. 378 links to the city’s largest employer, Shaw Air Force Base, in about 12 miles. From here, the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is only 40 miles west.Home to Crosswell Drive Elementary
The Sumter County School District earns an overall C-plus on Niche. Preschoolers can start at Crosswell Drive Elementary and move on to Chestnut Oaks Middle. Both schools score a C-minus, while Sumter High gets a C-plus rating. The Sumter Career and Technology Center is located on the high school campus. It offers 16 specialty programs with topics ranging from mechatronics and automotive trades to cosmetology and health science.
