Lakewood
New traditional homes in the Links at Lakewood subdivision
Homes are found on Lakewood's north and west sides, while protected agricultural land occupies the other half. Many original ranch-style houses date back to the 1970s. They usually feature sturdy red-brick exteriors and hip roofs that stretch across retro carports. Some homes have been remodeled, with new wood floors and modern kitchen appliances, while other homes feel like ‘70s time capsules, with wood paneled walls and bathrooms covered in pastel tiles. A few similarly-style manufactured homes are scattered throughout the neighborhood. The newest homes sit on quiet residential streets in The Links at Lakewood subdivision. Built in the early 2000s, these New Traditional ranch-style houses "all have one or two-car garages with a separate door for their golf carts," Morse says. These listings typically "range from about $225,000 to $400,000, depending on whether you're on the golf course or pond," she says. As for the older homes, those prices can range from about $50,000 for a fixer-upper to $150,000 for a completely remodeled home.Lakewood High School offers a dual enrollment program
Lakewood is part of the Sumter School District. Preschoolers can begin at Pocalla Springs and move on to Furman Middle. Lakewood High School sits toward the center of the neighborhood along Old Manning Road. Juniors and seniors can apply to Lakewood's dual enrollment program and take classes at Central Carolina Technical College. All three schools earn a solid C on Niche.Easy commute to Corporate Way
Lakewood sits on the southern outskirts of Sumter County, between the Pocotaligo River and U.S. Route 15. It's only 6 miles north from the highway to the shops and restaurants in Downtown Sumter, and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is about 55 miles west. Shaw Air Force Base is less than 20 miles away. "We have military families living all over this city, including in Lakewood," Morse says. Paper mills, packing plants and other factories sit directly across Route 15, along Corporate Way.Anyone can play on the Links at Lakewood Golf Course
Anyone can pay a small fee to play on the Links at Lakewood Golf Course. Completely remodeled in 2014, the 18-hole course offers nearly 7,000 yards of pristine fairways centered around a large fresh-water pond. "The people living on the pond can go fishing off their own docks or put a paddle board in the water, but motorboats aren't allowed," Morse says. "I mean, it's a big pond, but definitely not that big." One of the city's two roller rinks, the Skate Station of Sumter, sits at the north end of Lakewood next to the Food Lion.Try a hot dog at the Dubose Bait Center
The downtown district is home to most of Sumter's local shops and restaurants. Still, Lakewood has all the necessities within its boundaries. Near the neighborhood's north end, residents can buy groceries at Food Lion or walk next door to order sushi from Hawaii Seafood & Steak House. Tony's Place serves Italian subs and hand-tossed pizzas right across Highway 15. Local fishermen head just down the road to gear up at the Dubose Bait Center. Doubling as a two-pump gas station, the Bait Center claims to sell some of 'the best hot dogs in town.'
