A community split between Sumter's downtown and industrial districts
The busiest part of Downtown Sumter is also the busiest part of the Magnolia-Harmony neighborhood. Local restaurants, shops and bars line Main Street, but a few blocks east, things slow down a bit. The main branch of the Sumter County Library System stands across from local government buildings. Further east, the neighborhood becomes a mix of industrial facilities and residential streets. While it’s quieter here, with scattered bungalows and ranch-style homes, Main Street always has something fun to do, from weekly trivia nights to Sumter’s annual Oktoberfest.

Local shops and restaurants along Main Street
While there’s not much housing, Magnolia-Harmony has plenty of shops and restaurants along Main Street. Locally owned cafés and antique stores sit side-by-side in Italianate-style buildings trimmed with red brick sidewalks. “Hamptons is probably the nicest restaurant in Sumter,” says Talmadge Tobias, a longtime local resident and Realtor with Re/Max Summit. Opening in 2018, the fine dining establishment serves traditional Southern cuisine with an Italian twist. Side Bar is another local hot spot right across the street. The downtown tavern has 30 specialty bourbons and a wall of craft beers on tap. Piggly Wiggly and a few fast-food chains are just a few blocks along U.S. Route 15.
Bradley's Market is a local farm stand, with fresh produce and plants.

Listings are rare in Magnolia-Harmony
Homes here rarely come on the market. The most recent is a three-bedroom New Traditional ranch-style house listed for $150,000. That and other homes in the style were built in the early 2000s, but Magnolia-Harmony also has older bungalows and minimal traditional houses. Local churches and public housing are wedged between Turkey Creek and Boulevard Road.

The Sumter Opera House "is the heart of the downtown district"
Tobias says the Sumter Opera House “is the heart of the downtown district.” Built in 1893, the historic concert hall still hosts all kinds of entertainers, from stand-up comedians and country music stars to the Sumter Community Jazz Band. It also offers a free, family-friendly movie series each summer. Kids can attend Storytimes and other special events at the Sumter County Public Library about a block over. From here, it’s about a mile walk to the playground at Eastwood Park.
