A natural curtain of bald cypress trees and swampy wetlands separates Millwood from Sumter’s downtown district. The quiet residential neighborhood sits 3 miles southwest of the restaurants and small businesses on Main Street, and new national retailers are popping up less than a mile south. Along with these conveniences, it’s less than a 10-mile drive to the Shaw Air Force Base. “They’ve got a lot of military folks in Millwood,” Talmadge Tobias says. A local Realtor with Re/Max Summit and former Sumter City manager, Tobias adds, “It’s not just military folks, though. You’ve got Millwood Elementary right across the street, so a lot of young families with kids will move over there.”

Some of the oldest homes incorporate elements of Prairie architecture, with more defined horizontal lines and flatter roofs. Tall maple and oak trees separate backyard neighbors, while driveways are the dividing line between many next-door neighbors; though, parking can vary from house to house. There are paved driveways with carports, two-track style gravel driveways and some without any private parking at all. Sumter’s Green Swamp borders the north and east sides of Millwood, while an active freight railroad runs along the south edge. South Carolina Highway 120 serves as the west boundary. Locally known as Pinewood Road, SC 120 feeds into West Liberty Street, which connects downtown in about 3 miles. The City’s only full-service medical center, Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital borders Main Street. West Oakland Drive passes through the center of Millwood, creating a short cut to U.S. Route 521 and Business Route 378. These major highways connect to the Shaw Air Force Base in about 10 miles. Continuing west on Route 378, residents can easily access the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Second Mill Pond is a half mile away
There are no parks in Millwood, but plenty of outdoor recreation can be found within a 2-mile radius. More like a lake, Second Mill Pond extends across 130 acres and has a depth of 13 feet. Its community boat landing is only a half-mile walk from Millwood. Though motorboats are prohibited, kayaks and canoes make it easy for fishermen to maneuver between the pond’s majestic Bald Cypress trees. From here, it’s less than a mile drive to Swan Lake Iris Gardens. The 150-acre botanical garden and arboretum bursts with color each spring, showcasing over 120 varieties of bright purple iris; but the elegant creatures who reside here are its main attraction. All eight swan species glide across the lake year-round and attract locals and visitors alike.

Buy hand-picked vegetables at Lakeside Market
Grocery stores, local restaurants and small businesses border the north and south ends of Millwood. Residents can drive right across Pinewood Road to shop at the local Food Lion. Lakeside Market sells freshly boiled peanuts, hand-picked vegetables and homemade cheese less than a block away. In 2023, the third Chick-Fil-A in Sumter opened just south of Millwood. It’s one of many new commercial developments being built at the Pinewood and McCrays Mill intersection.
