Suburb close to Sumter's parks and trails

On the edge of Sumter's pond-flecked greenbelt, Spectrum offers a mix of suburban subdivisions and large lots lined with pine woodland. Residents can get a little more room on this side of town but remain close to Sumter's attractions and amenities. "The older areas are where the lots get larger," says Realtor Talmadge Tobias with Re/MAX Summit. Tobias has been selling homes for 19 years and worked as a city manager for 39 years. "With the newer developments, the lots aren't as large. So, these established areas are a big draw. It's also got that old-fashioned southern suburb feel--the area is quiet, and people enjoy that privacy."

Close to the Sumter's Swan Lake Iris Gardens

Spectrum sits on the edge of the city's greenbelt, which consists of the Green Swamp, Second Millpond, Shot Pouch Greenway Trail and Swan Lake Iris Gardens. "Swan Lake Iris Gardens is the only park in the nation with all eight species of swans," says Tobias. "There are also gardens with Japanese irises, lots of walking trails and boardwalks where you can observe nature around Swan Lake. There's also the Iris Festival, which is a huge draw each May." Tobias also notes the relaxing nature of the greenbelt. "I grew up swimming in Second Millpond--it's been there as long as I can remember. And the trail system is very serene and very popular; it runs from Swan Lake north to Dillon Park. Spectrum is also close to Palmetto Park, which "has a world-class clay tennis center," Tobias says. The park also has a sports complex, playground and picnic areas. The Sumter Civic Center is close to the American Legion Farmers Market, a weekly indoor showcase of local farms and artisans, and Little League Park, where ballgames are held throughout the season. The center is adjacent to the American Legion Fairgrounds, which hosts the annual Sumter Fair. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy being close to the Quixote Club, a nearly 600-acre, par 70 course with a clubhouse, restaurant and a soon-to-open teaching facility.
