The City of Sumter has been working to revitalize its downtown district for the last 15 years, adding new restaurants and pedestrian infrastructure. In 2024, the city began expanding its revitalization efforts into South Sumter, and Wilder is just one of the neighborhood's reaping the benefits. On Manning Avenue, freshly paved sidewalks and designated bike lanes will soon make it easy for folks to stroll downtown or visit the new South Sumter Art Park. While this walkability is a plus, Wilder's central highways make it easy to get anywhere in the city.
The Wilder neighborhood is located 2 miles south of Downtown Sumter.
Younger residents will love the new playground at the South Sumter Art Park.

Ranch-style homes from the 1950s and early 2000s
U.S. Highway 521 splits the residential sections in Wilder. Most homes sit on the community's east side along quiet, unlined streets. They typically date back to the mid-twentieth century and feature ranch-style architecture. Houses across the highway were mostly built in the early 2000s. They reflect a similar ranch style, with brick and vinyl facades and low-pitched roofs. Though Wilder has 225 homes, only three properties were sold in 2024. Two remodeled homes sold, for $100,000 and $179,000, and an empty, quarter-acre lot sold for $8,000. The most recent listings include a three-bedroom, 1,800 square foot home for $234,900 and a three-bedroom 1,645 square foot home for $175,000.
