Old and new homes with land
While there are plots of land for sale where a house could eventually be, there are also homes with multiple acres in Porter Township. A Craftsman-style house built in 2021 sits on 5 acres with four bedrooms and three garage spaces, and an 1874 farmhouse is on two acres with baseboard heat and hardwood floors. The older home is in the lower range of prices in Porter Township at close to $400,000, and the more modern home is worth $700,000. A 1973 ranch-style house with nearly 2,000 square feet and over 19 acres is just above $600,000.Preserving nature where three counties come together
Delaware, Licking and Knox counties converge in the area where the 40 acres of Newell Recreation Preserve is located. Most of the acreage is wetlands, but there’s also a native plant prairie. The preserve provides educational opportunities regarding the native people who lived in the area and what helped to sustain human life. The Ohio-to-Erie trail runs through the park, a small portion of the over 300-mile trail that links the Ohio River in Cincinnati to Lake Erie in Cleveland. Open from April to October; the Sunbury/Columbus North KOA allows RV or tent camping or staying at a cabin with a full bath and shower and a nearby laundry room.1874 water crossing
Chambers Road runs between State Route 61 and 656, and in the middle of that route is the Chambers Road Covered Bridge, completed in 1874 and the only one of its kind in Delaware County, though they used to be more popular. The county, at one time, had 60. “It’s a tourist attraction. Everybody likes to get pictures of it, which is cool,” Gongwer says. The bridge has never been painted, and portions of the wood siding have come off.
Six miles from Sunbury
There are many locally owned restaurants in Sunbury, a 10-minute drive from most places in Porter Township. The Sunbury Grill is open for breakfast and brunch Thursday through Sunday with typical diner fare. The home fries and the old-time ambiance get great reviews. Surve provides fresh food where a portion of the restaurant is where you can order at a counter and staff brings the food to you. The other part is a traditional sit at a table and order. Kroger has an entrance off Cherry Street. On-site, there’s a gas station and inside the store, there’s a Starbucks and a pharmacy.
Rides on demand
Since Porter Township is located entirely in Delaware County, residents can schedule a ride through the Delaware County Transit system. Rides can be arranged up to two weeks in advance by phone or online. The destination can be anywhere within Delaware County. The nearest hospital is the OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital in the city of Delaware.
Converging school districts

A small portion of the north section could attend the Highland Local School District, with a B-minus overall Niche grade. Eastern portions of the township may attend schools as part of the Centerburg Local District, getting a B grade overall. Most could attend Big Walnut Local School District classes, rated a solid B. General Rosencrans Elementary School has a 19-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and a B grade on Niche. Students at the B-plus-rated Big Walnut Middle School can earn high school and college credits as early as seventh grade. Big Walnut High School is the only high school in the district, home to the 2023 state cheerleading champions. The school is rated a B overall
