Retreat from the hustle and bustle
A little more than 30 miles northeast of downtown Columbus is a place where the views go on forever. That’s because there’s a lot of open space, and many homes have multiple acres to enjoy that view. “It’s a deeply rural area, but it’s growing,” says Jeff Gongwer, a Broker/Owner with RE/MAX Affiliates with about 15 years of experience. “There are starting to be more modern homes being built and sold for about $1 million, but they still have 5 to 10 acres of land.”

Old and new homes with land
While there are plots of land for sale where a house could eventually be, there are also homes with multiple acres in Porter Township. 1874 water crossing
Chambers Road runs between State Route 61 and 656, and in the middle of that route is the Chambers Road Covered Bridge, completed in 1874 and the only one of its kind in Delaware County, though they used to be more popular. The county, at one time, had 60. “It’s a tourist attraction. Everybody likes to get pictures of it, which is cool,” Gongwer says. The bridge has never been painted, and portions of the wood siding have come off.

Preserving nature where three counties come together
Delaware, Licking and Knox counties converge in the area where the 40 acres of Newell Recreation Preserve is located. Most of the acreage is wetlands, but there’s also a native plant prairie. The preserve provides educational opportunities regarding the native people who lived in the area and what helped to sustain human life. The Ohio-to-Erie trail runs through the park, a small portion of the over 300-mile trail that links the Ohio River in Cincinnati to Lake Erie in Cleveland. Open from April to October; the Sunbury/Columbus North KOA allows RV or tent camping or staying at a cabin with a full bath and shower and a nearby laundry room.
