Easygoing lakeside living in Sunrise Beach
Sunrise Beach earned its name for its place on the crest of the Lake of the Ozarks, while garnering popularity for its spectacular views. Nearly every area of this small community is bordered by water, save for the northern portion, which stretches upward into the neighboring city of Laurie. While Sunrise Beach might not have the booming retail or entertainment of other communities in the Ozarks, it offers some of the most direct shoreline access and a more easygoing vibe. “It feels like you’re always on vacation, that’s the only way I can describe it,” says Melissa Krantz, a local Realtor with Re/Max Lake of the Ozarks who’s been selling homes for 30 years. “There are a lot of sales for second homes, but more and more often, people live here for at least six months, if not year-round. There’s really not an off-season anymore.”
Recreation at the Lake of the Ozarks and premier golfing
Excluding Sunrise Beach’s north side, which stretches into the mainland, the area is surrounded by water. Residents of Sunrise Beach have ultimate access to the Lake of the Ozarks, so it plays a primary role in outdoor recreation. “You can truly get everywhere by boat, being on the lake is an everyday thing for a lot of people,” Krantz says. She mentions that bass fishing and wakeboarding are two favorite local pastimes. “You’ll see everything from 50-foot yachts to tiny, motorized fishing boats. It’s one big play area.” On the community’s east side, the private Club at Porto Cima features an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Design golf course, a clubhouse that hosts member events year-round and a yacht club.
A wide range of architecture along the lakefront
Sunrise Beach’s residential areas sport a wide range of architectural variety, with many custom homes. Potential homebuyers can find anything from midcentury condos to stilt lake homes and New Traditional properties. “From 2020 to 2025, our sales for lakefront homes increased over 150%. Most of what’s selling right now are waterfront properties because everyone wants direct water access and private docks,” Krantz says. “We have an array of housing types, just in general. Which is great, because a client can tell me exactly what they want, and I can find something in their budget.” The median sales price for single-family homes in Sunrise Beach is $2.3 million, much higher than the national median of $435,000.
Locally owned businesses and nearby shopping in Osage Beach
Sunrise Beach does not have large retail areas or expansive shopping centers. Dotted along Route 5 are independent businesses, from farmers markets to vintage clothing shops and small eateries. Sunrise Beach has several waterfront restaurants, where patrons can drive up on their boats and dock before they come in for a meal. Paradise Tropical Restaurant & Bar has been a favorite for years, offering cocktails, American fare and live music. “If you want to go to big shops, like Target or Walmart, it’s not a chore. Osage has the most commerce in the area, and you can get there in no time,” Krantz says.
Local schools offer scholarship program and steady academic ratings
Considering that Sunrise Beach is split between two counties, children living in the area can attend schools with either the Camdenton R-III or the Morgan County R-II school districts. Most will attend in Camdenton for ease of proximity, with Hurricane Deck Elementary found in Sunrise Beach, rated a B-minus on Niche. Students can move on to B-plus-rated Oak Ridge Intermediate before heading to B-rated Camdenton Middle and Camdenton High School. Camdenton High participates in the Missouri A+ Scholarship Program, designed to help students focus on a career path throughout their four years of high school to easily transition them into post-secondary education or high-wage earning.
Major community roads and navigating the area by water
State Route 5, locally called Sunset Boulevard, runs the length of Sunrise Beach. It connects north to Versailles and south to Camdenton; State Highway MM runs east, passing over the water into Lake Ozark. “We say that everything around the lake is 10 or 15 minutes away, no matter where you’re driving from,” Krantz says. “More people are on their boats than they are in cars.” The closest medical center, Lake Regional Hospital, is 21 miles away in Osage Beach.
