Superior is a residential city about 8 miles southeast of Boulder and roughly 23 miles northwest of downtown Denver. “There is so much to love about Superior and very little to dislike,” says Managing Broker Justen Staufer with Staufer Team Real Estate, who is also a board member for the Superior Chamber of Commerce. “Everybody I have met who lived in Superior as a kid and is now an adult looks back at their childhood and knows how fortunate they were to grow up here.”
Originally founded as a coal mining town in 1904, Superior transitioned to a farming community when the area’s last mine closed in 1945. As the city became more residential, the job market shifted to the healthcare, manufacturing and professional services sectors. Today, the city’s population sits at over 13,400 people and continues to grow. Master-planned neighborhoods maintain close communities, and new developments, such as Downtown Superior, aim for more retail and dining.

Newer homes in well-planned neighborhoods
Superior’s expansive landscape consists of established neighborhoods and subdivisions. Downtown Superior and surrounding neighborhoods have New Traditional row homes and multi-story townhouses and condos with balconies. There are also a handful of Modern Craftsman homes built after 2022. Neighborhoods farther south, such as Rock Creek, have single and multi-story Craftsman homes from the early 2000s, plus contemporary townhouses.
Single-family homes have a median sales price of $901,000, which is more than double the national average of $407,200.

Downtown’s shopping and dining, plus Superior Marketplace
There are multiple shopping and dining districts in the city, like Superior Marketplace, a massive business park with dozens of name-brand retailers, big box stores and several upscale chain restaurants. For more options, Rock Creek Village is a shopping center on Coalton Road with local restaurants. To the east is Flatiron Crossing, an indoor shopping mall and an AMC movie theater. The area is surrounded by fast food options as well. Downtown Superior is the city’s latest project – a 156-acre mixed-use development with retail, dining, businesses and additional housing. “The Downtown area is newly developed and still growing. Restaurants, wellness centers and retailers have begun to move in and there is plenty of room for more economic development,” Staufer says.

Superior’s warm weather events and activities
The ARTery is a multi-use path winding throughout Superior with sculptures and murals along it. So far, there are over 40 permanent art installations in the city’s collection. Another seasonal activity is the summer concert series at the Superior Commons Amphitheater on Saturdays. “The City and Superior Chamber are very involved with the community. There’s a Fourth of July Parade and Pancake Breakfast, Chilifest and Winterfest as the largest events every year,” Staufer says.

Getting educated in Boulder County public schools
Superior is served by the Boulder Valley School District, which enrolls roughly 28,400 students across 56 public schools and earns an A grade from Niche. The city itself is home to Superior Elementary School and Eldorado PK-8. For grades nine through 12, students living in Superior are zoned to Monarch High School in nearby Louisville.

Navigating Superior’s modes of transportation
The city's streets are both pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly, with sidewalks, designated bike lanes and various trails. “Superior is probably the most walkable community near Boulder,” Staufer says. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) also has several local bus lines with stops, including the U.S. Route 36 & McCaslin Boulevard Park-and-Ride Station.
Drivers can access U.S. 36, known as the Denver Boulder Turnpike, along the city’s northern edge. There’s also Colorado state Highway 128 in the south. While the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport is only 7 miles away for charter flights, travelers must use the Denver International Airport for commercial flights.
Dry climate and decreasing crime in Boulder County
The city contracts with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement. According to Colorado Crime Statistics, from 2020 to 2024, reports of violent crime decreased by 12%. Reports of property crime decreased by 29% over the same timeframe.
Superior’s semi-arid climate means residents experience all four seasons. The average annual snowfall in the city is 78 inches, which is higher than both the state and national averages. When the weather is dry there may be an elevated risk of potential wildfires. Mountain View Fire Rescue’s Station 5 responds to fire emergencies.
