About Surfside Beach, SC

About Surfside Beach, SC

Surfside Beach is a quiet, family-oriented ocean community

South along the Grand Strand is Surfside Beach, a historic community and quiet neighbor of Myrtle Beach. The area was initially a 3,000-acre sweet potato plantation in the early 1800s. In the 1920s, it developed into a town called Roach’s Beach with sand dunes and an undisturbed oceanfront. The community was renamed in the early 1950s and by the '60s Surfside Beach was an established destination with the motto of “The Family Beach.” “It’s like paradise,” says Jan Sitter, a Realtor with Grand Strand Homes & Land Realty and a longtime Surfside Beach Resident. "It’s a quiet beach.”

Raised beach homes and townhomes

The median home price is $423,000, higher than the state and national medians. Homes in the area include New Traditional, bungalow and ranch styles. Stilt houses are also available closer to the ocean. Sitter notes that most homes are not HOA-controlled. “You can find everything from a single-story home to a raised beach home. There are townhomes and duplexes, so we have a wide variety in Surfside Beach. You won’t find manufactured homes,” says Sitter.

Horry County Schools and weather risk

Surfside Beach students attend A-minus-rated Horry County Schools. Private religious schools are in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet. Hurricanes and severe weather can be factors, but the county does maintain an early warning system. Local maps show flooding can occur in areas closer to the water, but the risk decreases further inland. Sitter notes that the city also maintains the local ponds and other water passages to prevent any potential flood risk.

Local parks, indoor entertainment, and events

The community has multiple access points to the beach and an 814-foot fishing pier jutting into the Atlantic. Local parks include All Children’s Park, which has a playground and a picnic area. Martin Park features a bocce court, a horseshoe pit and shuffleboard. Fuller Park has a tennis court and playground. Memorial Park, adjacent to the library, has exercise stations, a walking track and a fountain. Golfers can head to Tupelo Bay Golf Center in Garden City, which features an executive golf course, driving range and mini golf. The Surfside Bowl and Entertainment Center on U.S. 17 BUS has a bowling alley, arcade and event space. Surfside Beach has a farmers market from April through December, featuring locally grown produce, baked goods and other items. The community also hosts several events, such as a Barbecue Festival, a Christmas golf cart parade and a Fourth of July celebration complete with fireworks.

Local restaurants and shopping on U.S. 17 BUS

Local restaurants can be found near the pier or along U.S. 17 BUS. River City Cafe is next to the pier and offers burgers, seafood and salads. Surfside Beach Pizza also serves pasta dishes and sandwiches. Crabby Mikes has a seafood and salad buffet along with steaks and desserts. Murrells Inlet, 6 miles south on US 17 BUS, has multiple dining spots and has earned the title of “Seafood Capital of South Carolina.” Wahoos Fish House has multiple drink specials and a large patio jutting out into the wetlands. The Dead Dog Saloon, a local staple since 2002, serves burgers, barbecue, seafood, and is open for breakfast. U.S. 17 BUS has several antique shopping stores and Hudson’s Surfside Flea Market, which has been in the area since the 1970s. Grocery stores, including Food Lion and Piggly Wiggly, are also on U.S. 17 BUS. Hospitals nearby include South Strand Medical Center and Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Local highways and Myrtle Beach International

Coast RTA provides bus service to the area. U.S. 17 BUS and U.S. Highway 17 connect to Myrtle Beach, while U.S. 17 also connects to Wilmington, North Carolina and Charleston. Myrtle Beach International Airport is 7 miles northeast of the community.

According to the most recent data from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, crimes against people have declined by 11%, while property crime has also trended downwards.
