Large lots outside Northern Cambria
Local roadways pass through small clusters of homes and meander through Susquehanna's rural, mountainous terrain. As roads go deeper into the township, lot sizes increase, and homes are spaced farther apart. The township's center is mainly farmland, with homes surrounded by acres of tilled earth. Most residences sit on large lots in flat areas, with a median of 3 1/2 acres. Residents living near Northern Cambria and at lower elevations may find small amounts of water in their basements after heavy rainfall. “We used to get really bad winters,” says Wallen. “But even they have been much more mild, we used to lose power for a week in the winter, now not so much.” Farmhouse, split-level and ranch-style homes are common in the area and range from $60,000 to $175,000. The CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.ATV riding at Rock Run Recreation Area
Prince Gallitzin State Park, 15 miles away, is the third most visited state park in Pennsylvania and has over 32 miles of hiking trails and a 1,635-acre lake for anglers and boaters. The park is popular with residents as it’s close to an ATV course and hosts events. “There’s an ATV riding course near the state park,” says Wallen. “And people can take their boats and stuff like that to the state park. It’s about 15 to 18 miles from Northern Cambria, and people frequent the events.” The ATV course is maintained by Rock Run Recreation Area, 6 miles from Prince Gallitzin, and has 140 miles of trails for ATVs, dirt bikes and other vehicles. For everyday activities, the Northern Cambria Public Library has events and programs for all ages. “We have book club and story hours,” says Wallen. “We do have programs throughout the year but none that are regularly scheduled.”Expanding elementary and middle school buildings
The Northern Cambria School District, which receives a C-plus from Niche, serves the township. Children may attend Northern Cambria Elementary School and Northern Cambria Middle School, both receiving a C-plus. Students advance to Northern Cambria High School, which receives a B-minus. All school buildings are in Northern Cambria. Due to a decline in student and teacher populations, the district is expanding the elementary and middle schools so all grades may learn under the same roof.Apple Cider Festival held each October
The local volunteer fire department, Hope Fire Company of Northern Cambria, hosts events throughout the year, including car shows and other events. “The fire department is quite active in the town,” says Wallen. “They do a fireman festival, and they do different parades and sandwich sales throughout the year. There’s a social hall, they’ll have different events there, you can also rent it out for receptions and parties. They will hold events there throughout the year. Car shows are quite regular throughout here in the summer months.”Apple Cider Festival, held in Prince Gallitzin State Park each October, features hand-made apple cider and a vendor area. Religious services are held at Temple Baptist Church, St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic, Garman Church of God and others around the area.

The shop offers baked goods, ice cream and coffee in a homey setting. Mosscreek Bar & Grill, 5 miles away, is a local dive bar with pool tables and live music. “There’s a lot of restaurants in Ebensburg,” says Wallen. “If they want a nice, sit-down meal, there’s Applebee’s, La Fiesta and a local joint called Off the RAK.” Off the RAK is a locally owned Ebensburg restaurant and bar, 21 miles away, serving pub food and American fare.
