Swoyersville Little Library shows borough cares for neighbors
Swoyersville is a small borough 5 miles from Wilkes-Barre. "We don't even have a stoplight," says Grace Conner, lifetime resident and founder of the Swoyersville Little Library. Conner set the library up as her Girl Scouts Gold Award project to give children easy access to books. She received so many donations at the start of the project, including a large one from Scholastic, that she could donate books to every elementary school classroom and fill the library's shelves. That was over six years ago, and what was supposed to be a self-sustaining project has become a community resource that Conner still happily maintains. The Little Library is a testament to the residents' care for the town and neighbors, further supported by the Parks and Recreation Board's efforts to host community events and revitalize the parks.
Mid-twentieth century homes
Single-family homes line the streets of Swoyersville, sitting on trimmed lawns that stop at sidewalks. Many yards are decorated with trees, bushes and flowers. While there are a variety of architectural styles, bilevels and Foursquares with dormer windows are common in the neighborhood. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the mid-twentieth century and cost between $125,000 and $275,000. Newer construction can go for upwards of $400,000.

Whether attending a community event or spending time outside, the Swoyersville parks are a defining part of the borough. “People utilize the parks more than you’d think,” Conner says. Eugene A. Malley Park is a baseball field next to Tripp Street Community Park, featuring a playground with an accessible swing. Loveland Park features a jungle gym for kids to climb and a basketball court That's ideal for a quick pickup game.
The Parks and Recreation Board started planning community events and fundraisers for revitalizing the parks in 2021. One of these fundraisers is the Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser, where people can donate money to put fake flamingos on a friend’s lawn. “It’s fun to see the yards and say, ‘the neighbor down the street got flocked,’” Conner says. In addition to their fundraising efforts, Luzerne County awarded the board a portion of a grant dedicated to county maintenance.
