North Tacoma
760 acres of recreation in Point Defiance Park
Point Defiance Park draws nearly 3 million visitors to its 760-acre space. Often, parkgoers are out on Owen Beach enjoying the views of passing boats and Vashon Island or renting a kayak. Hikers and bikers can enjoy the 11 miles of trails that connect. The Rhododendron Garden and the Rose Garden are where to spot a variety of floral species and connect with nature. However, the park’s focal point is the Zoo and Aquarium, where seeing over 350 animal species is a year-round affair. Kandle Park is a centrally located park with various amenities. Kids can enjoy the playground, spray ground, or pool area. Skaters may test their tricks on the skate park, while dog walkers take their pups to the trails. Judge Jack Tanner Park is located right along Puget Sound. Anglers can cast their lines here, while others may stroll along Ruston Way's walkways. Boating and paddleboarding are common water activities, offering several marinas to park.Craftsman-style dominates
Homes in North Tacoma vary among single-family homes and condos. However, there are more apartments than condos. Condos are often located closer to the shores, providing fun morning water views. Two bedrooms can cost from $295,000 to over $1.4 million for a luxurious condo. “If you’re coming from Seattle and the North, it’s more bang for your buck,” says Tim McKeown, realtor at Windermere Chambers Bay. “It's a better deal in Tacoma, and it could be a larger home.” Single-family housing varies, but the most popular style is Craftsman. Craftsmen vary between one-stories bungalow styles to two-stories mansion-like properties on the coast. These prices range from $400,000 to $2 million for two stories with larger yard space and water views. Contemporaries, specifically Pacific Northwest Contemporary styles, are priced over $1 million. Traditional homes range from $535,000 to over $1 million.Shop and dine around multiple subdivisions
North Tacoma has various cuisines, but most shopping and dining are along Ruston Way, the Proctor District and Sixth Avenue. Valhalla Coffee Company has been a neighborhood favorite for over two decades. Cooper’s Food and Drink is a newer spot that’s already built a following. Diners love the laid-back atmosphere and their American dinners and weekend brunch. Duke’s Seafood serves fresh seafood overlooking Commencement Bay. A fan favorite dish is their clam chowder. Groceries can be grabbed from Safeway and Metropolitan Market Tacoma. However, many take advantage of the fresh produce and products sold at Proctor Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. The staple attraction is held year-round but slows down from December to March.Arts and Nature celebrated through various events
The Point Defiance Flower and Garden Festival takes visitors through an elaborate floral showcase. The event held in June provides garden tours, food trucks, and a beer and wine garden. Mosaic: Tacoma’s Arts and Culture Festival has been an event staple for 36 years. Thousands come to Wright to celebrate Tacoma culture with live performances, food and crafts. Blue Mouse Theatre is a 100-year-old theatre that continues to showcase the latest flicks in Hollywood. Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium lights up for the holiday season for their Zoolights events from Thanksgiving through the new year.Financial literacy for North Tacoma students
The neighborhood has multiple elementary schools. However, Sherman Elementary accommodates the most students, earning a B-plus from Niche. Mason Middle, rated a B on Niche, offers 12 different boy and girl athletic teams. Grade school wraps up at Silas High, which has a B from Niche. Students can learn financial literacy through the GESA High School Credit Union Program. Students may enroll in higher education locally at the University of Puget Sound, which offers over 50 undergraduate programs.Various transportation options
Central Tacoma is slightly over two miles away through side streets or Highway 16. Pierce County busing can also assist with local travel. To reach Seattle, drivers may take the 36-mile drive up Interstate 5. “If they commute to Seattle, they can take the Sounder train,” McKeown says. “It goes down to Lakewood, and you can get there in under an hour. So, that’s an option.”
