Bayside West welcomes fishing enthusiasts and retirees
Snug against Old Tampa Bay, Bayside West offers a range of living options, catering to young individuals, families and retirees. Residents can scour the waters with locally based fishing charters or meet friends for lunch at a restaurant along the Selmon Expressway. Families with young kids have a few school options close to home, and Publix and Walmart sit nearby when locals need to stock up on groceries. Residents who work in Downtown Tampa can drive 7 miles north to get to work or to have fun downtown. “People move here for the location since we’re in central St. Pete and to Downtown Tampa," says Lynn Nikiforakis, a leasing consultant at 4800 Westshore Apartments. “But we also have fun restaurants close by, too.”
Gated communities, private docks and ranch homes
Future Bayside West residents can find waterfront properties with private boat docks, but the area mainly contains inland ranch homes built in the ‘50s or ‘60s. Some ranch homes feature carports, although most residents park on uncovered driveways. These homes, with the occasional inground pool and simple designs, often sell for $475,000 to $600,000. Those who want to settle down in Bayside West might move into a manufactured home in the gated 55-and-up community. Residents of this community have convenient amenities, such as the nearby pool and paved sidewalks to use when walking near Tampa Bay. Anyone who doesn’t need a lot of space might pay $275,000 for a Spanish-inspired condo at Culbreath Key Condominiums or $500,000 to $600,000 for a townhouse with water views. The Toni Everette Company plans to build new homes in The Isles at Old Tampa Bay community. There will be up to 550 residences and 67 luxury properties within a separate gated area.
Nearby medical care and Air Force Base
The neighborhood sits north of the MacDill Air Force Base and south of the Tampa International Airport, so locals occasionally hear planes fly overhead. The Air Force Base also puts on events for locals to view historic planes or see airshows. Bayside West residents who need routine or extended medical care can visit the nearby Kindred Hospital Bay Area – Tampa. Patients with a wide range of conditions can visit to receive treatment. “We’re in Flood Zone A, but we tend to see more fallen branches than flooded roads when it rains,” Nikiforakis says.
Singing along at the Green Iguana Bar & Grill
Nikiforakis recommends The Green Iguana Bar & Grill, Salt Shack on the Bay and Hula Bay Club for dining out. “I like the Salt Shack the most because of the vibes and because it’s right on the water.” The Green Iguana Bar & Grill guests can sit at the bar for brunch or visit for trivia or karaoke nights. Locals can also visit Dairy Joy to experience the retro atmosphere with a statue of Elvis and a line of 1957 Chevys out front. Locals stop by this family-owned spot for classic banana splits or dipped ice cream cones. A nearby Walmart and Publix provide the neighborhood with fresh produce selections.
Join the celebrations at Gasparilla Pirate Fest
Bayside West residents put on their best pirate attire before heading to Downtown Tampa for the Gasparilla Pirate Fest. Visitors enjoy live music, parade floats and a pirate ship that sets sail on the Seddon Channel. The festival has been a part of Florida’s history since 1904, and locals keep the history alive with pirate-themed fun. Residents might also visit the downtown area to join the Chinese New Year Celebration arranged by the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans (SACA).
The Panthers spike the competition
Parents in Bayside West send their kids to Anderson Elementary School, which gets a B from Niche. After attending the B-minus-rated Madison Middle School, kids graduate from Plant High School. The Plant Panthers volleyball team currently holds 12 state championship titles. Niche awards Plant High an A-plus.
Fishing with local charters or at AJ Palonis Jr. Park
Parents might take their kids for a fun day at Foster Park to hang out on the playground equipment or start a game on the basketball court nearby. Residents who want to get out on the water book a day of fishing with Shallow Point Tampa Fishing Charters or Stealth Fishing Charters of Tampa Bay. These programs are particularly popular with young kids eager to reel in their first big catch. Guests will be guided by a captain with skilled advice and a knack for the bay’s hot spots.
Local fishing enthusiasts also head to AJ Palonis Jr. Park to cast a line into the water. A nature trail and boardwalk cut through a tunnel of Mangroves, allowing guests to feel secluded from the outside world. There are several areas to sit and enjoy the sunset across the bay. With binoculars, park visitors can track the birds jumping between Mangroves or cutting across the sky.
Quick trips to Downtown Tampa or the airport
Residents rely on their cars to get around, but the nearby Selmon Expressway makes driving 7 miles to Downtown Tampa a breeze. Locals can also drive 8 miles to the Peter O. Knight Airport to catch a flight out of Florida. The Tampa International Airport sits 6 miles north of the neighborhood, so locals can also head there when wanting to fly across the country for vacation.
