A recreation-heavy suburb in Pittsburgh
Tarentum is the total package, from riverside parks to the popular business district of lively restaurants. “There’s a lot going on in Tarentum, says Christine Spece, Realtor at Czekalski Real Estate Inc. who has been selling homes in the area for nearly two decades. “It’s an up-and-coming place that has really taken off in the last few years.” Many new bars and restaurants have started to pop up in the shopping district, known as Tarentum Borough. Since the neighborhood sits right on the Alleghany River, a lot of residents enjoy waterfront events that the community offers, according to Joy Foust, a Realtor for Czekalski Real Estate Inc., who was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. “It’s a tight-knit area where everyone knows each other pretty well,” Foust says. “Many people that grow up here, stay here.”

Eat soup and salad in JG’s Tarentum Station
Tarentum’s business district has restaurants galore lining the streets. “Tarentum Station is one of my favorites,” Spece says. JG's Tarentum Station Grille offers dishes like French onion soup and steak salad in a converted train station built in 1913. Fox's Pizza Den serves specialty pizzas and sandwiches for a quick bite to eat. For a morning pick-me-up, diners head to Harvest Moon Coffee & Chocolates, a cozy café where people order signature lattes and scones. At Cindy’s Hometown Restaurant, people enjoy breakfast in a diner with large booths and counter stools, ensuring they get a vintage vibe with their meal. For everyday groceries, people head to Aldi. There are a couple of nightlife spots in this district, including Barley, a spot with karaoke nights, and Ales on 6th, another bar that has dart boards and pool tables.

Scenic views of the Alleghany River
The Dreshar Stadium is a popular destination to watch Little League games. Athletes visit Deborah D. Booker Community Center for pickup games and team practices. For golf, residents must go outside the neighborhood to River Forest Country Club. Alternatively, neighbors can take a stroll along the Allegheny River for scenic views at Tarentum Riverview Memorial Park. “The memorial park has boat docks where people can get right on the river,” Spece says. The park is also great for children who want to play on the jungle gym or splash pad.

Start the day on PA-28
Most residents' mornings start with hopping on Pennsylvania Route 28, also known as Alexander H. Lindsay Memorial Highway, or heading to a bus stop along 7th Avenue. These two travel options help people reach work and play in downtown Pittsburgh. “Tarentum is very walkable and also has a bus lane running through it, which helps people get to work daily,” Foust says. Major employers include Allegheny Valley Hospital and the Highlands Public School District. For frequent flyers, Pittsburgh International Airport is 36 miles, or about an hour's drive away.
