Former Silver City now a growing Boston suburb

In the 1800s, Taunton became known as “Silver City” for its silversmithing operations. Prominent manufacturers based here at the time included Reed & Barton, The Poole Silver Company and Taunton Silverplate Company. By the late 1900s, most of the city’s silversmiths were shuttered; today, Taunton’s industry is tied to semiconductors, silicon and electronics manufacturing, with major employers such as General Dynamics, Comcast and Verizon Communications. Re/Max Synergy Realtor Luis Martins, who has decades of experience in local real estate, says the city is poised to grow. “It’s a suburb, with lots of surrounding farmland and mom-and-pop stores,” he says, noting its small-town atmosphere. Martins predicts the new East Taunton Station, which will connect Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail service to Taunton in early 2025, “will really expand the city.”

Single-family homes sell for under the Massachusetts median

Taunton homes come in an array of styles, from 1860s-era Queen Annes in neighborhoods like Somerset to new construction townhomes in areas like Whittenton Junction. List prices start at around $140,000 for modest manufactured homes and can climb to nearly $900,000 for new builds in the city’s highly sought-after east side. According to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors, the median sales price for single-family homes is $493,000. That’s nearly $150,000 under the median for the state. Condos here are also less expensive than in the surrounding state, with the Taunton median being $352,500 compared to the state’s median of $550,000.

Downtown Taunton is the heart of the city’s dining and art scenes

“The local mall, Silver City Galleria, closed down and got demolished last year. It hasn’t been replaced with anything similar, but there’s shopping and dining scattered all over town,” Martins says. Taunton Depot, a small strip mall, features national chains on Taunton’s southeast side. Boutique retailers and restaurants are concentrated in downtown Taunton. It’s also the heart of the arts scene, with galleries and studios. The annual Downtown Art Jam street festival celebrates local visual and performing artists each spring, with live music, artist exhibits and vendors. Downtown is also where the Old Colony History Museum hosts the annual Liberty & Union Day, celebrating the city’s culture and history with Colonial-era reenactors, food and family-friendly activities.

Two state parks within city limits

Two state parks fall within Taunton city limits. Massasoit, a densely forested area with hiking trails, camping areas, cranberry bogs and fishing ponds, is on the east side, sprawling over into the neighboring town of Lakeville. The 10-acre Watson Pond State Park, on the north side, features a sandy, swimmable beach and a playground. It’s open seasonally, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Taunton Parks & Recreation maintains 18 public park facilities scattered around the city, from athletic fields and playgrounds to memorial parks. The Taunton Green anchors the historic downtown business district with 5 acres of greenspace stretched before the castle-like county courthouse. Every December, the city holds a Lighting of the Taunton Green ceremony. The festive tradition is more than 100 years old, part of the annual Lights On Festival, during which the Silver City is transformed into a winter wonderland with live entertainment, Victorian carolers, and a downtown storefront holiday window decorating competition.
