Telford offers quiet life near Philadelphia’s metro area
Telford, situated about 35 miles north of Philadelphia, is home to about 4,800 residents. The historic Telford Train Station anchors the borough, and while it's no longer active, the station serves as the primary community gathering point and an important display of times past. It was officially incorporated in 1886 as a borough, and as new residents moved to the outskirts of the metro area in search of more laid-back living, Telford's population steadily grew. "It's a simple, small town with quiet living surrounded by farmland," says Caitlin Pederson, the local assistant manager of the Telford Borough Authority. "It's pretty uniquely located between Montgomery and Bucks County, and even though it's more rural, you're not far from Philadelphia."

Mix of historic homes and newer builds across the borough
Many homes built in the early to mid-20th century still stand along the sidewalks around downtown, and the architecture is diverse, ranging from classic Craftsman homes to brick cottages and Colonial Revivals. Closer and into the 21st century, townhomes and condos were built around the community, as well as some stock of New Traditional homes. The percentage of renters and owners in Telford is nearly equal — according to Pederson, many living in Telford rent and commute to Philadelphia. The median sale price in the borough is $420,000, compared to Philadelphia's median of $275,000.

Local businesses around Main Street and nearby shopping centers
Telford doesn't have sprawling shopping centers, but rather is focused more on local, with Main Street and the surrounding blocks emphasizing the community. "The borough is more residential, but we have family-owned businesses and a very small downtown district focused around the Telford train station," Pederson says. Several restaurants in the area have been open for years, including the family-run Vietnam Café, which serves traditional Vietnamese dishes in a laid-back dining room. There are a few local grocery stores and farm stands, such as Landis Supermarket and Yoder's Farm Market. Just outside the borough proper is a retail area with stops such as CVS, Aldi and The Home Depot.

Throughout the year, Telford hosts various events for the community to enjoy. "Telford Happenings Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the borough," Pederson says. "The main events for us are the Tedford Night Market and Oktoberfest." Every Wednesday night from May to August, the Telford Night Market sets up at the historic Telford Train Station. The market features local produce and artisan stands, food trucks, beer gardens and live music.
