About Temple Terrace, FL

About Temple Terrace, FL

One of the first planned golfing communities

Named for the groves of Temple oranges that used to line what was once the largest citrus nursery in Florida, the lush suburb of Temple Terrace is one of the country’s oldest golfing communities. Incorporated in 1925, the city will be celebrating it’s centennial anniversary next year. Situated northeast of Tampa along the twists and turns of the picturesque Hillsborough River, Temple Terrace hugs the University of South Florida to the west and I-75 to the east. Home to about a dozen community parks and gardens, the city is rich in outdoor amenities and cultivated green space.

Variety of older homes and some new construction

The housing market in Temple Terrace is very competitive due to several factors, including proximity to Tampa and limited inventory relative to demand. The housing stock began development in the 1950s before really taking off in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Among the older homes, architecture is varied and eclectic, with standard slab-on-grade Florida ranches, breezy Mediterranean-style homes with terra cotta roof tiles and arched doorways and windows, and even midcentury modern homes with sleek lines and immaculate landscaping. Though it is largely built out, there is some new construction in the city. River Park by D.R. Horton off Temple Terrace Highway is one of the only new construction communities in the area. The 12-month median price for a single-family home was around $400,000 in January 2024, on par with greater Tampa. Homes range in price from around $175,000 on the low end for a two-bedroom, two-bath condo to over $1.2 million on the high end for a five-bedroom, four-bath on the river.

Growing downtown district is in development stages

Primarily residential and quiet by design, the main business district in Temple Terrace is near the Hillsborough River on North 56th Street at Bullard Parkway. It’s not a traditional central downtown yet, but the city has a master plan for development and attracting new businesses for property development is the primary goal. For stocking up on groceries and essentials, there’s a Winn-Dixie market at the Temple Terrace Shopping Mall near Chicago Avenue. For a quick bite, there are national fast-food chains like Burger King and Checkers, and a Starbucks for an always deserved coffee. Hidden away behind an aggressively modest storefront in a strip mall, Syrian Shawarma is the real deal – simple and authentic. The vibe inside isn’t anything to write home about, but the employees create a warm atmosphere, and the beef shawarma can’t be beat.

Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club is a centerpiece

Awash in green space, Temple Terrace maintains over a dozen community parks, though the golf course is one of city’s main draws. Designed by the esteemed Scottish American course architect Tom Bendelow, the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club opened in 1922 – three years before the city incorporated. “It’s unique because the golf course is very much the center of the city, where people tend to come together,” says General Manager John Harbison, who has been in the business for 40 years. Harbison says the club prides itself on being a good neighbor, welcoming dog walkers and joggers onto the grounds. “We host events throughout the year, like the Fourth of July and the holiday wonderland drone show, that bring out thousands of people.” The course, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012, is uniquely accessible, with streets around each hole. “Temple Terrace attracted a lot of high-profile golfers early on and people used to follow them around in Model Ts,” Harbison says. Famed evangelist Billy Graham is said to have decided on his career path while meditating on the 18th green one night in 1939. Nearby at Riverside Park, the Angel of Hope Memorial features an angel statue with 200 engraved bricks as a monument to lost children. Woodmont Park is a tranquil green space notable for its gazebo and garden. The nearby Woodmont Clubhouse, a special event venue, is the oldest building in the city, built in 1914.

The HART 48 bus serves 33 bus stops in the area departing from Netpark Transfer Center and ending at University Area Transfer Center. East Fowler Avenue runs east to west through the city and the campus of the University of South Florida. Important to know

Though it has a residential feel on most of the streets, Temple Terrace is home to or nearby several institutions that bring a lot of people into the surrounding areas throughout the year. In the southeast section of the city is Florida College, a private Christian school founded in 1946 that was once known as the Florida Bible Institute. On the western border of the city is the University of South Florida, with an enrollment near 50,000 students. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is about three miles west of Temple Terrace via East Busch Boulevard. The Museum of Science & Industry is right outside the city border.
