Terre Town is growing to meet Terre Haute’s housing needs
Terre Town is an established neighborhood that’s getting new life thanks to a push for more housing in Terre Haute. While much of the neighborhood dates back to the 1950s, new builds are cropping up north of Haythorne Avenue. “Terre Town was sitting there forever and was old farm ground that wasn’t being used,” says Carrie Smith, a Realtor with Gibson Real Estate and Terre Haute resident. The renewed interest in the area, paired with the construction of two new subdivisions, “is really lifting the neighborhood up, and people are taking pride in their properties.”
Midcentury bungalows and new traditional builds in Southard Acres subdivisions
Most of the neighborhood is populated with midcentury cottages, bungalows, ranch-style homes and the occasional farmhouse on large lots. Some feature attached garages, but detached garages and driveways are typical. Smaller two-bedroom homes can cost between $90,000 and $130,000, while larger homes with updates can range from $130,000 to $230,000.Development in the area stalled for decades until 2024. “The city got a grant and there’s been a big push from Thrive West Central, which pushed homebuilders to build,” Smith says. “A lot of builders took action and got grants to help with infrastructure. Southard Acres West is developing right now, and every time I list a house there it flies off the market as soon as it gets on.” Southard Acres West was halfway complete in March 2025, while construction of Southard Acres East began in the spring of 2025. The new traditional homes have Craftsman-inspired elements, attached garages and span up to 1,400 square feet. Prices start at $220,000 and can cost up to $250,000.

Career and technical education programs at Vigo County School Corporation
The neighborhood gets its name from Terre Town Elementary School, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche. Otter Creek Middle School receives a C, while Terre Haute North Vigo High School gets a B. Vigo County School Corporation offers 34 career pathways. Juniors and seniors can earn college credit and industry certifications in fields like digital design, culinary arts and construction trades.

Nostalgia at Moonlite Drive-In Theater and Wigwam Skate and Event Center
The sports fields on Boston Avenue host youth football and baseball leagues, while the Moonlite Drive-In Theater, a local tradition, screens both new releases and classic films. Wigwam Skate and Event Center is a nostalgic roller rink that has been a favorite for over 50 years, hosting events for both kids and adults. Markle Mill Park, revitalized after the mill dam's removal in 2023, now attracts visitors for kayaking, fishing and wildlife watching, with improved water flow supporting 152 miles of stream and better fish migration. Shopping and dining along Lafayette Avenue
A quick trip down Lafayette Avenue leads to Kroger and the Plaza North shopping center, which has a Save A Lot grocery store, Big Lots and Harbor Freight hardware store. Lafayette Avenue is lined with chain restaurants, but there are a few local establishments nearby. Mornings may start at Bear’s Coffee and Roasting Co., a local coffee shop with rotating specialty drinks and “Bear Bombs,” the shop’s signature craft carbonated energy drinks. Thrifters can pluck treasures from Amy’s Corner Mall, a no-frills flea market with new items almost daily. Terre Haute Transit is fare-free in 2025
Terre Town is close to U.S. Route 41, known in town as Third Street. The busy road connects to Interstate 70, one of Indiana’s main highways. Terre Haute Transit bus stops are scattered throughout the area, and the service became fare-free in 2025. The neighborhood’s established streets lack sidewalks, but minimal traffic means residents can still walk and jog through the neighborhood with ease. The community’s new subdivisions will feature sidewalks. Buyers should note that several active rail lines through the area can cause traffic delays.
