The Hideout offers lakefront living with wooded surroundings
The Hideout is a private, residential community that offers secluded living in the rolling, wooded hills of northeast Pennsylvania, just over 20 miles outside of Scranton. Homes sit along winding country lanes that surround Roaming Woods Lake, and many of them have private docks and waterfront views. The community is gated and has its own restaurants, parks, beaches, a golf course and a small ski slope for winter recreation. “There are more amenities and activities than most people would ever need,” says Realtor Eileen Talalas of Re/Max Best, a former resident of The Hideout who now lives just outside the community. “There’s something for everybody.”
Most homes were built in the ’70s and ’80s with some new builds
The Hideout has approximately 3,300 single-family homes, most of which were constructed between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, although there’s some new construction as well. “There’s a really good range. You’ve got starter homes all the way up to million-dollar lakefront homes,” Talalas says. Architectural styles include everything from modest ranch-style homes and vacation homes to luxury cabins and contemporary houses. Most are situated on large, wooded lots, offering plenty of privacy and views of the area. Lakeside homes are highly sought after for their private docks and boat launches. Prices range from $175,000 to $400,000 for smaller, older homes that may require some renovation. Larger, luxury homes can sell for between $600,000 and $1.5 million. “About two-thirds of the community are second homes or vacation homes, and the other third are full-time residents,” Talalas says.
Recreation includes lake access, courts and a private golf course
The Hideout is full of outdoor recreation opportunities. Boating, kayaking and fishing are popular lake activities in the summer. Residents can head to North Beach for swimming, picnicking or relaxing by the water, or swing by the Hideout Playground for play structures, tennis courts and basketball courts. Golfers can tee up at The Hideout Golf Course, a private 9-hole course with a pro shop and a clubhouse. During the winter months, residents have access to The Hideout’s ski hill and winter sports complex, which features a tubing hill and several short slopes with varying degrees of difficulty. “It’s very popular with young kids. It’s not very challenging for more experienced skiers, though,” Talalas says
Residents have access to casual eats and nearby grocery stores
There are several dining options within The Hideout, including Tiki Bar, a restaurant inside the community’s Main Lodge. It’s the go-to for American cuisine and an outdoor patio that overlooks the lake. Residents can head just outside The Hideout to Hamlin Highway for a wider range of options. Black & Brass Coffee Roasting Co. is a local favorite for espresso drinks and pastries, while Drafts Bar & Grill offers pub fare and craft beer. There’s also Palermo’s Pizza for pizza, pasta and cocktails. Weis Markets, about 5 miles away, is the nearest grocery store. Farmstands and markets are also within a short drive, including Ritter’s Farm Market and Kim and Andrew’s Farm Market.
