About Thibodaux, LA

Historic homes and major employers in bayou city

Thibodaux has undergone several iterations since its founding as a trading post named Thibodeauxville in 1830. The name was shortened to Thibodeaux in 1838 and was changed one more time in 1918 to drop the “e.” Today, there are about 16,000 residents. The city’s Cajun roots are felt throughout the historic downtown and attractions like the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center. Many people move to the city for work, with Thibodaux Regional Medical Center and agricultural manufacturer John Deere having offices in Thibodaux. The facility is expanding to include cotton harvesters; Louisiana Economic Development estimates the growth will create about 180 new direct and indirect jobs. Another draw is Nicholls State University, whose campus is located just 1 mile from downtown.

Century-old properties near downtown

The median home price in Thibodaux is $240,000, which is significantly lower than major cities like New Orleans, about $330,000. Older homes, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places, are concentrated around Historic Downtown Thibodaux . “Those homes are typically 100 years – or plus – old,” says Jared Gros, Realtor with Canal & Main. “Most of those have been renovated.” The rest of the city is a mix of custom-built properties and mid-20th-century cottages and ranch styles.

Nicholls State University is a public, four-year institution. Programs include nursing, business and the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute. “Nicholls is a part of the community,” says Gros, a Nicholls graduate. “The support Nicholls State gets is from Thibodaux and its surrounding areas.”

Popular events in Downtown Thibodaux

Downtown Thibodaux marries historic buildings with local eateries, businesses and boutiques. Thibodaux Main Street, Inc. helps revitalize downtown, coordinating programs that highlight some of the city’s creatives through biannual Art Walks and other events that foster community, like Big Boy’s Main Street Cook-Off. The cook-off precedes one of the year’s biggest celebrations, the Thibodeauxville Fall Festival. Most other shopping and dining options are along major streets. “You have Canal Boulevard, which is your main thoroughfare through Thibodaux, which has a lot of your fast-food restaurants and sit-down restaurants and a lot more of your bigger box stores,” Gros says.

Mardi Gras celebrations include Louisiana King Cake Festival

Like much of Louisiana, Thibodaux celebrates Mardi Gras in a big way. “We have several days of parades and the tableaus and the parties and the king cakes,” Gros says. “Nowadays, there are so many different flavors of king cakes, you could do a whole story on king cakes.” Thibodaux hosts the Louisiana King Cake Festival, which raises money for Lafourche Parish public schools.

Cajun culture and city parks

From interactive exhibits at the Bayou Children’s Museum to boat tours of Bayou Lafourche hosted by the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, there are plenty of ways to experience Thibodaux. The city has several parks, the largest of which is Peltier Park. This recreational hub hosts youth programs like baseball and basketball, or ones catering to adults, like yoga and line dancing. South Louisiana has earned the nickname “Sportsman’s Paradise” because of the sheer number of wild game, including waterfowl and rabbits. “Just south of Thibodaux, Grand Isle is probably one of the best fishing areas in the world,” Gros says. Grand Isle is about 80 miles away, or just under two hours, but many people will trek there during peak fishing seasons.
