Playgrounds, paths to parks and pickleball

Neighborhood trails and sidewalks connect Briar Ridge Park’s open greenway to Skylake Park, with its open space and a playground. Cherry Park includes baseball fields, a multipurpose field, walking paths and a clubhouse-themed playground with a tall slide. “One of the things we try to achieve throughout our park system is unique features or amenities, such as North America’s first Moku-Yama (wood mountain) nature play unit designed to provide both physical and psychological development at Eastlake Shores Park,” says Doug Romig, the City of Thornton’s Parks, Recreation & Community Programs Director. Margaret Carpenter Park, also known as “Carpenter Park,” includes an expansive playground with swings and climbing structures, a splash pad and a lake where paddle boats glide during the summer. “Pickleball has taken America by storm,” Romig says. “The four pickleball courts at the park are new and phase one of a three-phase plan to eventually install eight more courts for a total of twelve, allowing the city to host tournaments while also meeting the local demand.”

Summer festival, fall car show and Winterfest

Many events occur at Carpenter Park, including the city festival Thorntonfest in June and the Fuel & Fury Car Show in September. “In [December], we have WinterFest, a three-day weekend event with over 300 holiday trees, a North Pole village, ice skating and strolling carolers,” Romig says. “On the Saturday of this event over 30,000 attend, with the weekend totals around 50,000 visitors.”
