Nason Park, situated behind the Village of Thornton Community Center, and Diekelman Park offer traditional play areas and sports courts, while the village's skate park is located on the grounds of the Village of Thornton Police Department. The most prominent green space is the Wampum Lake Nature Preserve, tucked on the west side of the village. Residents can enjoy a diverse ecosystem featuring a sand seep, freshwater marsh and wet floodplain forests. The preserve offers a popular one-mile loop trail, attracting birding enthusiasts, hikers and casual walkers alike. Shaded picnic groves and expansive open spaces provide tranquil spots for relaxation. Wampum Lake, the centerpiece of the preserve, spans 35 acres with nearly a mile of shoreline. Stretching one and a half miles in length and a half-mile in width and reaching a depth of 450 feet at its lowest point, the quarry consists of three interconnected large quarries linked by tunnels. Thornton’s other well-known attractions include Homewood Memorial Gardens and Washington Memory Gardens, both located on the west side of the community, with the former housing the graves of legendary Queen of Blues KoKo Taylor and iconic comedian and actor Bernie Mac.
