Parks in and around Thorton

Charles P. Nason Park, situated behind the Village of Thornton Community Center, and Diekelman Park offer traditional play areas and sports courts, while the village's skate park is located on the grounds of the Village of Thornton Police Department. The most prominent green space is the Wampum Lake Nature Preserve, tucked on the west side of the village. Residents can enjoy a diverse ecosystem featuring a sand seep, freshwater marsh and wet floodplain forests. The preserve offers a popular one-mile loop trail, attracting birding enthusiasts, hikers and casual walkers alike. Shaded picnic groves and expansive open spaces provide tranquil spots for relaxation. Wampum Lake, the centerpiece of the preserve, spans 35 acres with nearly a mile of shoreline. Beyond its scenic beauty, the lake serves as a designated ice fishing location. The community is also widely known for The Thornton Quarry, which stands as a popular destination for residents to explore. Stretching one and a half miles in length and a half-mile in width and reaching a depth of 450 feet at its lowest point, the quarry consists of three interconnected large quarries linked by tunnels. Residents can schedule tours on the first Saturday of June and October. Thornton’s other well-known attractions include Homewood Memorial Gardens and Washington Memory Gardens, both located on the west side of the community, with the former housing the graves of legendary Queen of Blues KoKo Taylor and iconic comedian and actor Bernie Mac.

Scarecrow Stroll is one of several Thorton events

Throughout the year, the village of Thornton organizes events to foster community connection, such as the Scarecrow Stroll at Nason Park, trunk or treats, pumpkin hunts and Thornton's Annual Holiday Happening Weekend during the first weekend in December.
