19th-century suburban borough
Throop was first incorporated as a borough toward the end of the 19th century and was originally populated by individuals working in the coal mining and silk manufacturing industries. Situated between Scranton and Carbondale, modern-day Throop is now a mixed-property neighborhood that includes a range of residential, municipal and industrial sectors. According to Colleen Weissman, an experienced Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred Properties, homes in the area “feature a wide range of prices” and are usually close to commercial areas and public transportation. Students can attend public schools in the Mid Valley School District, rated C-plus by Niche, and can also enroll in after-school programs at the Throop Community Civic Center.
American Foursquares and traditional home styles
Homes can be found along residential streets that cluster near municipal buildings and commercial properties. Some properties come with driveways and garages, but street parking is also available and commonly used. Residents can find a range of traditional-style homes here that often feature gabled roofs and vinyl siding; also common are American Foursquare residences and colonial-inspired architectural details, including central entrances and black shutters. Most homes range in price between $100,000 to $230,000, but some three-bedroom new-builds can go for more than $450,000.

Higher education programs at Penn State Scranton
Throop Borough is zoned for the Mid Valley School District, which consists of two C-plus-rated public schools: Mid Valley Elementary Center serves young learners in Kindergarten through 6th grade, while students in grades seven through 12 can attend the Mid Valley Secondary Center. For students in higher education, the neighborhood is also home to “Penn State Scranton, a satellite campus of the Pennsylvania State University,” according to Weissman. The Scranton campus offers 14 programs for bachelor’s degrees and four associate’s degree programs. Graduate courses for law, nursing, business and education are also available at the satellite campus.
Indoor recreation at Throop Community Civic Center
Borough residents can find outdoor recreation at Washington Street Park, which offers athletic facilities, including a basketball court, baseball field and tennis courts, as well as a pavilion area and playground. Bellman Street Park also features a basketball court, picnic tables and playground equipment. The Throop Community Civic Center is an indoor recreational center where residents can find technology and gaming equipment, as well as athletic courts.

Dine at family-owned Porkiez Bar & Grill
The Miracle Shopping Center is located along the Harry P. O’Neill Highway and includes Market 32 grocery store and Big Lots discount department store, which sells a variety of retail products such as household goods and furniture. At this shopping center, residents can also dine at the Loading Dock Bar & Grill and browse a menu full of seafood, pasta and classic American food options. Another popular local restaurant is Porkiez Bar & Grill, a family-owned restaurant that features live music and karaoke.

The one and only Throop Cow Flop
Since the 1980s, the borough has been the host of an unusual event known as the Throop Cow Flop, which is organized by the Throop Booster Club as a fundraiser for community-based clubs and extra-curricular activities. This summertime celebration has changed throughout the years and has now evolved into a multi-day event that includes fireworks, food, live entertainment and a parade.
Neighborhood industrial area
Away from the neighborhood’s residential and commercial areas is an industrial sector marked by large warehouses for product suppliers, truck dealerships and landscaping services. This area is also home to Keystone Container Service, a waste management facility, and part of the Keystone Sanitary Landfill. Although the industrial sector sits east of Throop’s residential areas, locals might see and hear trucks and construction equipment.
Convenient access to U.S. Route 6
Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 6 border the neighborhood area and converge at a nearby highway interchange in Dunmore, which gives commuters convenient access to Downtown Scranton and surrounding areas. The County of Lackawanna Transit System operates a fixed bus route that has multiple stops in Throop and runs from Downtown Scranton to the Borough of Jessup. Residents are a 12-mile drive away from the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport, located just off Interstate 81.
