Woods separate residential streets from industrial area
Well-kept homes in cul-de-sacs make up the Durham Road neighborhood of Tigard. The industrial section of the community has quirky, local restaurants close to the mall, Bridgeport Village, while houses are separated from railroad tracks, Interstate 5 and woods through which Fanno Creek and its namesake trail run. “It’s accessible to the city and the surrounding suburbs, but it’s also a quiet neighborhood,” says Gordon Paulsen, a library assistant at the Tigard Public Library. “The Fanno Creek Park is a big draw for this area.”

Bar inspired by the adventures of John Barleycorn
Durham Road is just north of Bridgeport Village, which consists of Saks OFF 5th, Crate & Barrel, Barnes & Noble, the Apple Store, a movie theater and a collection of smaller stores and restaurants. The neighborhood is connected to a large shopping and dining area, and it has a noteworthy food scene. The McMenamins John Barleycorns pub pays homage to a British folktale character who symbolizes whiskey, culturally immortalized by the likes of Jack London and the 1960s band Traffic. Drinks are served on a bar made of re-milled redwood wine barrels under a cathedral ceiling in a dimly lit, eclectic interior characteristic of the Pacific Northwest chain. The nearby FlyBoy Brewery and Pub has more than 30 brews on tap—some of which are made in-house—and stone-fired pizzas in an aerospace-themed interior. “You get the sit-down restaurant feel, and being within walking distance gets them,” says Ava Newton, a sales coordinator for the nearby Courtyard by Marriot Portland Tigard hotel, referring to its guests. Trader Joe’s and Safeway are across the interstate for groceries.

Fanno Creek Trail connects residential streets to wetlands
Fanno Creek Park bleeds over into north Durham Road, insulating residential streets from the sounds of the commuter rail and the interstate to the east. The paved Fanno Creek Trail reaches into several cul-de-sacs, connecting the neighborhood to the park’s 30 acres of grassy and wooded wetlands, where the trail’s bridges and boardwalks offer views of its namesake creek and aquatic wildlife. The larger trail system travels more than 10 miles, from Tualatin, in the south, to Beaverton, in the north, making it one of the region’s most extensive paths. Farther south, picnic tables surround a playground near a basketball court in Bonita Park.
