Rhododendron gardens and wading birds in Summerlake Park
Summerlake Park is the neighborhood’s largest park, covering 30 acres that include two playgrounds, a ballfield, pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, as well as a rentable picnic shelter. Designated fishing areas dot the north side of the park’s Summer Lake, home to herons, otters, ducks and Canadian geese. The Summerlake Dog Park is a popular gathering spot for pups and their owners, and bushes of rhododendrons welcome parkgoers near the parking lot and brighten the walking path around the lake during the warmer months.Barrows Park curves around the southeast side of Progress Ridge TownSquare, and its southernmost end has a traditional playground and four statues of animals. The park also has the southern end of the Westside Regional Trail, which continues roughly 6 miles north to Tualatin Hills Nature Park, near Aloha. Another playground, in Northview Park, is less than a mile away.

The coffee shop is a short walk to Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, too. “AVA’s is one of our favorite coffee shops, and the kids love to go to Menchie’s,” says Karen Pinto, the assistant property manager at Sunflower Apartments, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. “Near AVA’s is a little water fountain. When it’s nice out and the weather is hot, we’ll take the kids there to play.” Big Al’s is across from the shopping center; a massive entertainment center, it has a bowling alley, an arcade area and a 55-foot high-definition projection screen for sporting events. The neighborhood also has a Safeway and Godfather’s Pizza, a Pacific Northwest pizza joint named after the cult classic movie, “The Godfather.” Washington Square Mall is another popular shopping destination, with high-end stores like Nordstrom, Williams-Sonoma, Macy’s and an Apple Store.
