Homes that reflect the rise of Toledo
This verdant setting is complemented by architectural styles ranging from large Georgian-style riverfront estates to smaller Cape Cods. This area also includes a large number of Colonial-revivals as well as brick ranch-style homes. There were two significant waves of homebuilding in Beverly that reflect the peaks of Toledo's industrial might. The first wave was in the 1910s-1930s; the next was in the 15 years after World War II. "As the city grew, many industrialists and executives moved along the river and put up some houses that were top-shelf," says Rick Turner, a real estate consultant with Key Realty who has 30 years of experience in the Toledo market. Depending on the location within Beverly, homes can range between $74,000 and $718,000. The median lot size is less than 1/4 acre. Parking arrangements vary from detached garages to driveways and street parking. Narrow streets are mostly gridded and lined with trees and sidewalks.Year-round events at the Toledo Zoo
Toledo Zoo ensures that Beverly never lacks events, no matter the season. Music Under the Stars is a free, weekly concert series each summer at the Zoo Amphitheatre. Every December, the zoo is decked out in more than a million lights for the Lights Before Christmas display. The zoo also hosts a family-friendly New Year's Eve party that allows kids to ring in the new year at noon rather than midnight. "The zoo is one of the gemstones of our city and Northwest Ohio," Turner says.Career preparation and the arts
Beverly is part of the Maumee City School District and Toledo Public Schools system, both of which offer open enrollment. Two elementary schools in Beverly are Beverly Elementary, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche, and Harvard Elementary, which has a C grade. (Bonus: Kids can grow up and say they went to Harvard.) These schools feed into Bowsher High School, which earns a B-minus rating. Bowsher has a hands-on Career Technology program and an array of arts courses.Golf, parks and boating clubs
In 1897, former British Open champion golfer Willie Park Jr. designed the Toledo Country Club, a private course still open today in the southern part of the neighborhood. Three years later, at the north end of Beverly, the Toledo Zoo opened with the donation of a single woodchuck. From that modest beginning, the zoo and its aquarium are now home to the Toledo Museum of Science and more than 10,000 creatures from 720 distinct species. Next to the zoo is Walbridge Park, which continues from the zoo's boundary to the river and includes trails, a playground and picnic shelters. Delaware Park is popular with kayakers who traverse Delaware Creek. Dog owners throughout the city can become Glass City Dog Park members to allow their fur babies to run free and socialize with other dogs. Other neighborhood parks include Beverly, Woodsdale, Copland and River Road. In addition, members of the Maumee River Yacht Club and Toledo Sailing Club take advantage of Beverly's waterfront location. An easy trip downtown and beyond
Beverly offers convenient access to the rest of the Toledo area. Anthony Wayne Trail, which cuts through the heart of the neighborhood, offers a 5-mile straight shot to downtown. Interstate 90 forms the neighborhood's southern border, running east towards Cleveland and west towards the rest of Northwest Ohio. Greater Midwest Urgent Cares is less than a mile away on local streets, and the University of Toledo Medical Center is a 3-mile drive via back roads. The Toledo Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) has several stops in the community, and Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport is a 13-mile drive via Interstate 90.So many treats to choose from
Wixey Bakery has made Beverly's birthday and wedding cakes, doughnuts and cookies since 1930, proving sweet enough to survive the Great Depression and the Covid-19 pandemic. Lickity Split ice cream parlor has been a neighborhood mainstay for over 35 years. In addition to shakes and floats, the eatery serves a variety of burgers. There's a big parking lot across the street, and according to manager Layla Kajsasz, the busiest days are Friday and Saturday. Christie's Candies has been hand-dipping chocolates and other confections here since 1972. Plate 21 serves coffee, tea, alcoholic drinks, smoothies and food for light breakfasts or lunches. Next door, The Smokin' Olive Deli is a popular lunchtime spot known for its sandwiches and paninis. Near the community's southern edge, Earnest Brew Works has outdoor seating with umbrellas. Although the brewery doesn't serve food, customers can bring their own or try the frequent food trucks. The nearby Glendale-Heather Downs neighborhood has grocery options, including Kroger and Walmart.
