From the start, Birmingham's strategic location near the mouth of the Maumee River was attractive to settlers in northwest Ohio. This thriving suburb is where the city's rich steel manufacturing history meets the area's ecological landmarks of green spaces and waterways. Many of the homes here are historic, dating back to the late 1800s-early 1900s.
A brief history of Birmingham
Birmingham began its life as Toledo's first industrial area thanks to the river's proximity to Lake Erie, which was promising for shipping. While most plants closed in the mid-20th century, there are still glimpses of this community's proud, hardworking past through the train tracks that run throughout the neighborhood and the many homes that have been passed down for generations.
Downtown Toledo only 3.2 miles
Downtown Toledo is just a 3.2-mile drive, making commuting convenient for residents. Interstate 280 skirts Birmingham's southwestern boundary. The Toledo Express Airport is a 20-mile drive via Interstates 80 and 90. Additionally, the area is served by several Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) bus stops. "You're never more than 15 minutes from anywhere," Black says.
Dine and find autographed hot dog buns
Residents can get hot dogs and soup at Tony Packo's, Birmingham's signature eatery. This Hungarian American restaurant was made famous by former Toledo native Jamie Farr on the hit TV series M*A*S*H. "It's known for celebrity-signed hot dog buns that are kept in cases," Black says. According to Black, the restaurants along the waterfront are very popular with locals. One notable is Real Seafood, a contemporary eatery that serves fresh fish and seafood.
The newest metropark
Birmingham offers several green spaces in and around the community. One of the newest is Glass City Metropark on Front Street. A glass pavilion with rooftop plants and plazas, a sledding hill, walking paths, an event lawn and views of the city are among the park’s attributes. Jamie Farr Park offers amenities like well-maintained sports fields, playgrounds, and walking trails. The park's design seamlessly blends green spaces with recreational areas, creating a welcoming environment for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Collins Park features its own golf course and a baseball field. Residents can visit the National Museum of the Great Lakes on Front Street, which is open year-round and has a docked lake freighter for waterfront tours.
Attend the Ethnic Festival
Birmingham hosts the annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival, also called Weekend in the Old Country, where thousands come together every August to honor the community's heritage with food, music and activities for all ages.
Homes with history
Arts and Crafts and Prairie are the neighborhood's primary architectural styles. Those looking to move to Birmingham will find it's one of the most budget-friendly markets in the city with prices ranging between $27,000 and $121,000. "It's a great place for a starter home or for investors in the renter's market," says Toledo resident and Realtor LeAnne Black with Serenity Realty. Lots are small, about 1/8 acre, suitable for a garden or sitting area, and most homes either have garages or residents park in their driveways. Narrow streets are lined with trees and sidewalks.
Schools offer advanced studies
Students can begin their education at. Birmingham Elementary School, which serves students from kindergarten to eighth grade, has a C-minus from Niche. Waite High School has a B-minus from Niche and offers the College Credit Plus (CCP) program, which enables students in grades seven to 12 to take classes at universities or public colleges in the state.
