Four streets just south of the engine plant
Old Town is bordered by the aptly named River Road to the west, overlooking the Niagara River. The neighborhood can seem disconnected from the rest of the town of Tonawanda, with the General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant (GM Plant) separating the four streets from the rest of the town. The GM Plant is one of the highest employers in the city of Tonawanda. “It’s the scenery that people like,” says Andrew Scott, a licensed real estate broker and partner with Scott Realty Group. “There’s the neighborhood on one side, there’s Niagara and Tonawanda on the other side. It’s a great place to see the sun drop, and you’re looking at Canada on the other side of the water.” The neighborhood consists of a few commercial businesses but is primarily residential.
Interstate 190 to the west and bus lines to Buffalo
The Empire State Trail, a 750-mile trail that crosses the entirety of the state of New York, is along the Niagara River and acts as the neighborhood's western border. However, this trail is accessible from Aqua Lane Park, about a mile north of the neighborhood. Interstate 190 is alongside the trail and can be accessed about a mile south. A fence then separates I-190 from River Road. The neighborhood is serviced by two buses along River Road and two on Vulcan Road. Three of the four buses start in downtown Buffalo, with one starting at the State University of New York at Buffalo to the west and ending about a mile south of Old Town.
Duplexes on narrow lots north of Buffalo
“It’s a very good price point in Tonawanda,” says Michael Cipolla, Realtor with 716 Realty Group WNY. “From an affordability standpoint, it’s a desired place.” Homes sit close together, often with smaller front yards in order to have a larger backyard. Sitting closer to the road, most houses may have a driveway leading to a garage behind the home. Most of the neighborhood consists of duplexes, with pricing ranging from $175,000 to around $260,000. There are some bungalows which can range from $106,000 to $130,000 and some New Traditional homes, built in the late 1990s, that begin around $215,000 and reach about $240,000. Many easements will have trees in various stages of maturity, from smaller recently planted to towering mature ones. “People are definitely putting on roofs, new siding and porches,” says Scott. “They take care of the lawns, they’re planting flowers.”
Two restaurants within and groceries to the east
Along the water, Scime’s Tackle and Variety has live bait while Primeval Forest Nursery sells and delivers native plants. Along Tonawanda Street, The Dalmatia Hotel sells wings and beer while Vulcan Express Mart and Kitchen sells pizza. About 2 miles east in the Tops Elmwood Plaza, an ALDI shares the space with various other retailers such as The Home Depot, Tops Friendly Markets and Bath & Body Works.
Riverside Park to the south and smaller park within
To the south of the neighborhood, the 22-acre Riverside Park holds the Bud Bakewell Ice rink (commonly referred to as Riverside Ice Rink), several spots for sports, including baseball, tennis and basketball, as well as a playground for children. At the intersection of Roswell Avenue and Grover Place, children can play tag on the playground at Old Town Park as adults take a moment and sit on the benches along the walking path.
International Baccalaureate classes at the high school
Students begin at Holmes Elementary, which receives a C-plus from Niche, for kindergarten through fourth grade before moving to the B-rated Herbert E. Hoover Middle School for fifth through eighth grade. At Kenmore West Senior High School, which earns a B from Niche, students can take International Baccalaureate courses and participate in over 50 clubs.
Tonawanda seasonal events and public skating through the week
The Riverside Ice Rink has public skating throughout the week, usually from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. during weekdays and from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, however these are not set times and may shift depending on if the rink is reserved. Within the neighborhood, the Boys and Girls Club of the Northtowns has events focused for children ages 5 to 13 throughout the summer. The town of Tonawanda has seasonal events like an Independence Celebration and a Family Valentine’s Dance. “They have a lot of events, especially over the summer, based around holidays,” says Cipolla. “Especially St. Patty’s Parade, a 4th of July Parade. They also do farmer’s markets to engage with the people.” The Kenmore Farmer’s Market runs every Sunday between June and October.
