Norton
Suburban Neighborhood in Topeka, Kansas
Shawnee County 66604
Side-by-side bungalows are very common
Most houses in Norton were built in the early 1900s. Bungalows with wide front porches are the most prominent homes along the neighborhood’s tree-lined, grid-pattern streets. While not as common, a few larger American Foursquares can also be found. Homes are situated side-by-side on approximately 0.10-acre lots. Back alleyways provide access to backyard detached garages. While street parking is common, some houses have driveways in the front. Home sizes can range anywhere from 800 to 1,600 square feet. They typically sell for around $90,000 to $170,000. However, properties in need of some work can sell for as low as $15,000.2 miles from fun at Gage Park
The 160-acre space at Gage Park makes it one of the largest in Topeka. There are tons of fun activities for kids, including a 1-mile miniature train ride, a century-old carousel, the Topeka Zoo and the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, featuring lots of hands-on learning activities. Walkways weave throughout the park, taking people over a lake bridge, under canopies of trees and to Reinisch Rose Gardens' reflecting pond and 5,500 rose bushes. People also enjoy visiting the park to play beach volleyball and swim in the outdoor community pool, which features four water slides, high dives, sprinklers and a rope obstacle.Topeka Public Schools and Washburn University
Students attend Lowman Hill Elementary School, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to Landon Middle, which gets a B-minus grade. Topeka High earns a B grade while being ranked the fourth-most diverse high school in the state. Built in 1931, Topeka High is well known for its elaborate Gothic-style architecture with a 165-foot bell tower inspired by Henry VIII’s Great Hall at Hampton Court Palace. Students may continue their education at Washburn University, just 1 mile south of Elmhurst.Topeka Metro buses and tornado factors
From 10th Avenue, residents can either drive or take a Topeka Metro bus 2 miles east to downtown. Stormont Vail Hospital is also just a half-mile drive down 10th Avenue. Interstate 70 is about 2 miles north of Norton. It runs west through the whole state and about 60 miles east to Kansas City.Like any place in Topeka, Norton has the potential to be impacted by severe weather, as the city is located in the Midwest’s “Tornado Valley.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been tracking tornadoes since 1950 and has not recorded one in Norton since. Topeka also does not have any public tornado shelters.
Drive-in featured on the Food Network
There are a few places to shop and eat on 10th Avenue on the neighborhood’s north side. Louie’s 10th Street Lounge and Laundromat offers a truly unique experience, where people can do their laundry and grab a drink at the bar while they wait. Bobo’s Drive In has been serving its famous root beer, apple pie and burgers at car hops since 1948. The restaurant gained national attention when it was featured on the Food Network’s show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2007. For quick shopping trips, locals can head to Dollar General. Einstein’s Outdoor Outfitters, a local sporting goods store, is located right next to it. There’s also a Walmart Neighborhood Market about 1 mile away.
