Central Torrance
Midcentury homes
Houses in Central Torrance showcase a diverse range of architectural styles and eras, reflecting the neighborhood's development over several decades. Most homes were built in the post-World War II era and feature ranch-style and midcentury designs. There are also a few more traditional two-story Spanish-style homes with red-tiled roofs. Properties typically have modest lot sizes, with front yards and driveways. Homes generally sell for between $1 million and $1.5 million. Most streets are lined with well-maintained sidewalks set back from the road with grassy parking strips.Highly rated Torrance High
Most students in the area attend Torrance’s public schools, which are regularly ranked among the best in LA County. Fern Elementary and Madrona Middle School both have an A-minus rating on Niche. Torrance High School has an A rating and offers students a number of career and technical pathways to choose from, ranging from engineering to health studies to theater.Nearby Del Amo Fashion Center
The always-buzzing Del Amo Fashion Center is just down the street from the neighborhood and offers nearly endless retail possibilities. The mall has over 200 stores and is the sixth-largest shopping center in the United States. “If you’re looking for a long-term purchase, Central Torrance is one place where you’ll have endless shopping and dining options in every direction,” Kyle notes. Straddling West Carson Street and spanning about a mile in length, Del Amo has everything from used books to vitamin stores. The walkable promenade is dotted with palm trees and landscaped sitting areas. Locals can catch a movie at the mall’s theater or enjoy soup dumplings at beloved Taiwanese diner Din Tai Fung. Those looking to cook at home can head over to the Mitsuwa Marketplace, which is located within the fashion center and specializes in Japanese cuisine and groceries.Charles H. Wilson Park
Charles H. Wilson Park, which Kyle describes as “probably one of the coolest parks in the whole South Bay,” offers a variety of athletic fields and California’s first universally accessible treehouse, where children and adults of all abilities can enjoy a shaded view of the popular park. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, locals can also stock up on fresh, local produce from the Torrance Certified Farmers’ Market, which is set up in the parking lot. For a more scenic outdoor experience, Madrona Marsh Preserve offers wildlife viewing trails and a nature center. The preserve is particularly popular with birdwatchers, as over 150 avian species pass through each year.Torrance Cultural Arts Center
The Torrance Cultural Arts Center, just outside the neighborhoood's border, serves as a community hub, and hosts events throughout the year, from plays at the Armstrong Theater to annual events like the Torrance Cherry Blossom Festival. The center is also home to the peaceful Japanese-style Pine Wind Garden, as well as the Torrance Art Museum, which has a sizable collection of Southern California Art.Getting around South Bay
Major arterial roads such as Torrance Boulevard, Sepulveda Boulevard, and Crenshaw Boulevard provide easy access to other parts of the city and neighboring communities, as well as Interstates 110 and 405. Public transportation options in Central Torrance are provided by Torrance Transit, which operates several bus routes through the neighborhood. It’s roughly 10 miles from the neighborhood to Hawthorne and Los Angeles International Airport, and 15 miles to downtown Long Beach. For pedestrians and cyclists, the neighborhood offers sidewalks along most streets, though dedicated bike lanes are limited. The relative flatness of the terrain makes walking and cycling feasible for short trips within the neighborhood, but the car-centric design of many streets can make these modes of transportation less comfortable for longer journeys.
