Twelve Oaks
Midcentury New Traditional homes
New Traditional homes built between the 1960s and ‘70s, many with Spanish-inspired arched doorways and earth-toned stucco, are common here. “Most are three to four bedroom homes with decent lots, about 8,000 square feet,” Berg says. Sidewalks, shaded by tall oak trees, ornamental crepe myrtles and palms, are divided by narrow sidewalks. The Twelve Oaks Civic Association, or TOCA, installs and maintains benches, doggy bag dispensers, bird feeders and little free libraries throughout the neighborhood. Though there is a community lake, high water isn’t a big concern. “Almost every house is in a non-flood zone, so even though it’s relatively close to the bay, flood insurance isn’t required,” Berg says, adding that Twelve Oaks fared “pretty well” during the most recent hurricane season, experiencing just a few felled trees. Home prices start at around $385,000 and can climb to about $630,000.Twelve Oaks Civic Association promotes togetherness with events
TOCA is in charge of planning and hosting events, from quarterly meetings with guest speakers to the annual neighborhood garage sale. “We have a children’s Fourth of July parade, where we encourage kids to decorate their bikes and strollers, and we take a little walk around the lake. Afterward, the kids get popsicles, and the following weekend there’s a lighted bike parade at night,” Pritchard says. The biggest annual event is the Twelve Oaks Holiday Market, a vendor fair held in December, with 20-30 stalls, snacks and Santa. Celebrations continue with a Light Fight home decorating contest and a holiday bike parade. “Even though it’s December, you’re lucky if you’re not sweating. I’ve lived here 56 years, and it’s snowed exactly twice,” Pritchard says.Outdoor recreation galore with sports fields, beaches and more
Shimberg Sports Complex is a collection of lighted baseball diamonds and multipurpose fields just south of Twelve Oaks. The reservable fields are open to the public, and local youth sports teams use them for practices and tournaments. North of the neighborhood, Deerfield Park has a playground, tennis and basketball courts and a small pond where visitors can feed ducks. Tampa Bay beaches are about 15 minutes away. Ben T. Davis Beach, a narrow, sandy strip on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, is the closest. Clearwater Beach is less than an hour across the causeway, with white sugar sands, palm trees and seagrass-strewn dunes.Leto High School’s magnet program is nationally recognized
Morgan Woods Elementary and Webb Middle serve kids between preschool and eighth grade. Both earn C-plus grades from Niche. B-rated Leto High, which opened in 1965 as the first comprehensive high school in Hillsborough County, is home to the Collegiate Academy. The application-based program earned the Magnet Schools of America National Award of Merit distinction in 2024. The Collegiate Academy allows students to graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from Hillsborough Community College on top of their high school diploma. The Town ‘N Country Christian Academy, an unrated nondenominational school for pre-K through 12th graders, is a nearby private option.Waters Avenue has shopping, dining options
The shopping centers on Waters Avenue, north of Twelve Oaks, have residents covered for groceries and other everyday essentials. Walmart anchors Town ‘N Country Promenade, while Publix anchors Twelve Oaks Plaza. The two strip malls also have laundromats, beauty stores, bargain retailers, and fast-food chains like Panda Express and Church’s Texas Chicken. There are also several mom-and-pop eateries nearby, like Martin’s, a Puerto Rican barbecue spot, and Maikel’s, a Cuban bakery.Veterans Expressway puts Tampa metro in easy reach
The Veterans Expressway toll road runs north-south past the east edge of Twelve Oaks, connecting around Tampa. With no traffic, the drive south to the Tampa International Airport takes about 10 minutes. Tampa General Hospital is less than 40 minutes away. Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, or HART, provides bus service from stops on Waters Avenue.
