Hilly suburbs along Turtle and Brush creeks
Set within densely forested hills and valleys along Turtle Creek and Brush Creek, Trafford is a suburban borough with deep roots 19 miles east of Pittsburgh. “Trafford was a company town built by Westinghouse in the early 1900s, and they had a manufacturing presence here until the 80s,” says Andrew Capets, President of the Trafford Historical Society. “A lot of places like Trafford struggled when that industry left. We’re fortunate to have a council working to rebrand Trafford’s identity and bring in new businesses.” Thanks to locals working to improve Westmoreland Heritage Trail access and business growth, Trafford has retained a strong community focus throughout decades of industrial and economic changes.

Single-family homes on dense blocks or winding roads
Narrow sidewalks and rows of street-parked cars run along hilly blocks of single-family homes in Trafford’s central residential area, built close to their neighbors in a mix of familiar Prairie, National and Cape Cod styles from the 1900s through 1960s and selling for to $65,000 to $215,000 depending on square footage and rehab needs. Newer homes on larger lots line winding streets to the east and south of Trafford, selling for $215,000 to $370,000, and a handful of townhouse communities sell units for $170,000 to $205,000.

Bus stops and Pittsburgh commutes
A few bus stops from Fifth Street to Seventh Street bring Port Authority buses through Trafford, but service is not especially frequent, leading many to rely on personal vehicles to get around. Downtown Pittsburgh is about 19 miles west of Trafford, and destinations like the Monroeville Mall and UPMC East Hospital are less than 5 miles north.
The best way to travel in and out of Trafford is by the Port Authority Bus.

Cavitt Avenue businesses and new developments
Brick commercial buildings along Cavitt Avenue house vacant storefronts beside local businesses like Dom’s Pizzeria, Trafford’s pizza and hoagie spot. Within a few blocks, residents can pick up books at the Trafford Community Public Library or jam with a local band at CLUB 80’s Bar & Grill. Increased traffic on the Westmoreland Heritage Trail has drawn new businesses to open further from the main drag. “People take their kids on the trail and get ice cream afterward at Parkside Creamery,” Capets says. “Just last month they opened Wye Beer Company, they’ve been getting fantastic reviews.” Across the Trafford Veterans Memorial Bridge, the Haymaker Village Shops plaza is the closest source for essentials like Shop ‘n Save, Rite Aid and Dollar General. A handful of churches provide religious services throughout the borough.

Community parks and Westmoreland Heritage Trail
Locals have access to a few community parks within Trafford, like South Trafford Park, whose two ball diamonds host games off Brush Creek, and All American Park, a much larger athletics complex with seven ball diamonds. B-Y Park is Trafford’s best-known park, home to a playground and pavilions, central fishing pond and a short walking path separated from Turtle Creek by a stretch of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. “The borough put money into B-Y Park and a lot of people volunteered to revitalize it,” Capets says. “People bike the trail from Trafford up to Export, it’s attracting people from outside the community.” Bikers and walkers enjoy over 9 miles of paved and gravel trails between Trafford and Export, winding through dense forests along the banks of Turtle Creek.
