Waterfalls, caves and golf in Rising Fawn
Rising Fawn rests in the Appalachian Mountains of northwest Georgia, about 30 miles southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Over the centuries, its residents have included the Cherokee people, as well as coal miners, musicians and folk artists. Outdoor enthusiasts prize the area’s waterfalls, wild caves and opportunities for hang gliding. In more recent years, the McLemore Resort has begun to draw golfers and second homeowners as well.
Lookout Mountain offers a variety of recreation
Lookout Mountain spans the eastern edge of the community, and it is home to several recreation areas. One of the most well known is the 3,500-acre Cloudland Canyon State Park, a destination for hiking, mountain biking and exploring waterfalls. A few miles north, Lookout Mountain Flight Park offers paragliding and hang gliding lessons. McLemore Resort, on the eastern edge of the mountain, has two 18-hole golf courses that are open to members and resort guests. Within the Charles B. Henson Cave Preserve, on Johnson’s Crook, there are more than 40 caves, some with long vertical drops requiring a rappel.
Housing options in Rising Fawn
The community’s roads wind through the valleys, into coves and up mountains. Farms, forests and a few houses line the way. There are a few manufactured homes, which generally sell between $50,000 and $200,000. Between $220,000 and $520,000, buyers may find modest cabins and bungalows, as well as some condos in McLemore. Houses in the $540,000 to $1.2 million range tend to be “in more upscale subdivisions, or on the brow of the mountain with views off into the distance — or they have bigger plots of land,” says Heather Nicely, a Realtor with Century 21 Bellora who has lived in the area since 1979. In the McLemore subdivision, owners pay a $30,000 initiation fee, plus about $500 in monthly association fees.
Rising Fawn has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Dade County School and Walker County Schools serve the community
The eastern edge of the community is zoned for Walker County Schools, which earn a B on Niche. Throughout the rest of Rising Fawn, students can attend Dade County Schools, rated an overall B-minus. Dade Elementary School and Dade Middle School both earn B ratings, and Dade High School gets a B-minus. The high school offers educational pathways that enable students to focus on their interests. There are arts pathways, as well as career and technical education options, such as digital media and carpentry.
Area farms and restaurants, plus grocery stores in Trenton
Locals can get some of their food directly from the many community farms. Iron Root Pastures specializes in Mangalitsa pork, beef and dairy products, and Fox Mountain Farm offers seasonal berries. In Trenton, less than 10 miles north, there are a few hardware stores and grocery stores, including Ingles and Food City. “You have day-to-day basics in Trenton, but if you need more, you head into Chattanooga,” Nicely says.
Rising Fawn has several dining areas, including Canyon Grill, an upscale restaurant that sources some produce locally. There are also more casual options, such as Lookout Mountain Pizza Company or Café 136, which serves southern comfort food.
New Salem Mountain Festival and Rising Fawn Studio Tour
In October, regional woodcarvers, leatherworkers and other craftspeople showcase their work at the New Salem Mountain Festival, which takes place at the community center on Lookout Mountain. In December, the Rising Fawn Studio Tour provides an opportunity to meet local artists. “You drive from studio to studio, and it’s like a little open house with some cider or cookies,” Nicely says. Rising Fawn Gardens also hosts wellness retreats and yoga classes throughout the year.
Car travel and access to services in Chattanooga
Residents depend on cars for travel, and both U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 59 run through Rising Fawn. Chattanooga is about 30 miles northeast, with two major hospitals and the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.
Rising Fawn's climate
Rising Fawn has a relatively mild climate. Summer highs average in the upper 80s, but the temperature varies throughout the community. “If you’re on Lookout, you’re about 10 degrees cooler than in the valley,” Nicely says. In winter, “we get occasional snow, but it’s not something we fret over.”
