Essential county offices located in Trenton

Trenton is an area of central Jones County that includes the town of Trenton and the unincorporated communities of Comfort and Pollocks. The town is small, spanning less than a square mile, yet it carries the big moniker of county seat. Because of this, its roughly 240 residents are never far from a county office, including the county courthouse, the tax office, the magistrate’s office, the social services office, the chamber of commerce, and the county’s department of education. Just outside of town are the offices of veterans’ services, senior services, the sheriff’s office and the county landfill. Trenton embodies small-town charm, with older homes and tree-lined streets. Comfort and Pollocks are rural, with homes spread out on acres of land.

Historic homes in town with ample outdoor space

The town of Trenton offers ranch-style, manufactured, minimal traditional and Colonial Revival homes, often built between the 1920s and 1970s. Lot sizes are large, with big backyards that are sometimes used for barns or inground pools. Mature trees are plentiful, lining backyards and dotting front yards. Homes rarely go on the market in Trenton. Only two have sold since 2024: a three-bedroom Minimal Traditional for $145,000 and a 1940s farmhouse with four bedrooms for $289,000.

Outdoor activities at Brock Pond and nearby Croatan National Forest

Brock Pond is on the town’s south side and is a serene spot to take an afternoon walk. The large pond is popular for fishing, and the surrounding area features cypress trees and an old mill that supplied electricity to the town in the 1700s. Croatan National Forest is nearby and offers canoeing and fishing in its creeks and marshes, hiking and hunting.

West Jones Street is the main hub for shopping and dining

Residents pick up groceries at Piggly Wiggly and run other errands at the small businesses and services along West Jones Street, Trenton’s main thoroughfare. West Jones Street also offers a few local restaurants, including Aggie’s Pizza and Subs. The closest hospital is CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern.

Educational options from pre-K to community college

Trenton Elementary and Jones Senior High School are assigned to the area. Trenton Elementary rates a C-plus on Niche and serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Jones High serves sixth through 12th grade and has a B rating. Jones County Center, part of Lenoir Community College, is just outside of town. The center offers a barber school program and a degree in gunsmithing, among many other programs and certificates.

Comfort and Pollocks offer rural living on large lots

The homes in Comfort and Pollocks are mainly like those in town: manufactured and ranch-style on large lots. However, lots are often much bigger in Comfort and Pollocks, sometimes spanning dozens of acres. Comfort’s main roadway, Highway 41, is lined with the Comfort Public Library, a post office, multiple churches and Comfort Elementary, which rates a B-plus on Niche. Comfort also has its own volunteer fire and emergency service. Pollocks is just homes. In both communities, houses rarely go on the market. In the last year, one home sold in Comfort for $133,000 and one sold in Pollacks for $375,000. Multi-acre lots are available throughout the area, typically ranging from $15,000 to $130,000.

Residents get around by car, New Bern’s regional airport is nearby

There is no public transportation in the area, and residents get around by car. West Jones Street runs through the town of Trenton and connects to Highway 41, which travels to Comfort to the west and Cove City to the north. Pollocks connects to Trenton via Wyse Fork Road and Highway 41. The closest airport, Coastal Carolina Regional, is in New Bern and offers direct flights to Charlotte.

Occasional weather challenges throughout the area

Trenton is sometimes vulnerable to hurricanes. Both Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Florence hit the town. Due to the town’s proximity to the Trent River, flooding is also possible. The county’s website has tips on how to stay prepared for severe weather.
