Trinity is a small town where neighbors still know each other
Once a whistle stop for the Houston and Great Northern Railroad, Trinity is now a rural hub surrounded by farmland and forests. “It’s country life,” says Realtor Bobby McMahon with Southern Star Realty, who grew up in Trinity. “It has that small-town feel where everybody knows everybody and everybody looks out for everybody.” While the community maintains a hometown atmosphere, Trinity is developing. “We’ve grown a lot in the last 5 years or so,” McMahon says. “It used to be that you’d go to a stop sign on a side street to get onto Highway 94. Now, you go to the stoplight because there’s too much traffic at the stop sign.”
Trinity’s sports fields, creeks and lake access draw locals
The Trinity Community Center has a playground, walking path, picnic pavilion outside and a large indoor space that locals can rent for various events. Nearby Black Veterans Memorial Park, across from Lansberry Elementary School’s playground, features baseball diamonds and basketball courts. The Blanche K. Werner Public Library holds family-friendly events, and many community churches also host groups, camps and volunteer opportunities for children and adults.
Proximity to the Trinity River, which feeds into Lake Livingston, one of the largest in Texas, is a major draw. “The city is not directly on the lake, but it’s a country town, so we don’t really see where the city limit signs are,” McMahon says. Several hiking trails, campgrounds, boat launches and marinas surround the water. “There’s always something going on on the water,” McMahon says. Creeks and their surrounding woods are also outdoor hotspots. “I’ve hunted and fished all my life,” McMahon says. “White Rock Creek is one of the best creeks around. When I was a kid, we’d just go out there with a cane pole and a bobber.”
Home styles range from cottages to large-acreage farmhouses
Trinity is East Texas’s Pineywoods region, so several species of mature pine trees grow in its neighborhoods. McMahon says that the community’s housing can accommodate various lifestyles. “It’s a mixed bag out here,” McMahon says. “You get everything.” Prices reflect housing variety, with small cottages or ranch-style homes costing $120,000 to $260,000, and farmhouses on lots of acreage ranging from $780,000 to $850,000. Plots of land are also available at various sizes and price points.
Local restaurants offer catfish, crawfish and country buffets
Most of Trinity’s shopping and dining options line Texas state Highway 19. Well-known stores like Dollar General, Tractor Supply Co. and Brookshire Brothers sit along this thoroughfare, as well as chain restaurants like Dairy Queen, Subway and McDonald’s. But Trinity also has its fair share of local spots. “You need to go to downtown Trinity if you want some good country cooking,” McMahon says. Trinity Café serves classic Southern cuisine, from biscuits and gravy to fried catfish. Joseph’s Place Restaurant offers homestyle buffets, while Chicca’s Coffee is a go-to in the morning. Just outside of town, The Back Porch Bar & Grill, which McMahon says is a popular hangout, is open until 2 a.m. every day but Sunday, when it closes at midnight. “They have really great food,” he says. “They will have crawfish boils and live music regularly.”
Huntsville is about 20 miles away and offers more shopping and dining options. “We do everything by how far the Walmart is out here in the country, and we’re about 20 minutes from Walmart,” McMahon says. “And everybody says hi when you walk through the store.”
Zoned for Trinity Independent School District
The Trinity Independent School District serves the community. Lansberry Elementary and Trinity Junior High get C’s from Niche. Trinity High School gets a C-plus and offers career- and technical-education courses in fields ranging from Animal Science and Applied Agricultural Engineering to Digital Communications and Business Management.
Trinity Community Fair features parades, pageants and pep rallies
The Trinity Community Fair brings neighbors together for three days in September. The free event begins with livestock competitions and culminates with a nighttime carnival each evening. Some of the fair’s festivities include a parade, live music, a community pep rally, the Little Miss September Pageant for toddlers and the Trinity County Fair Queen Pageant.
Highways connect Trinity to nearby cities and airports
Texas state highways 19 and 94 run through Trinity. Huntsville is about 20 miles away, Bryan-College Station is about 75 miles away and Houston is about 90 miles south. Easterwood Airport, which offers domestic travel, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport are both about 80 miles away. In case of emergency, Trinity Memorial Hospital District is in town.
