Troy University helps make its namesake city of more than 17,000 a cultural hub in southeastern Alabama, and the city's historic downtown is the backdrop for the arts, with festivals like TroyFest and Pike Peddlers Storytelling Festival. “We call the town center ‘The Square,’ and pretty much everything happens around The Square,” says Troy resident and Realtor Sharon Lea Langford with Porch Light Real Estate. “During [college] football season, we have a ton of events like band parties and the homecoming parade; we also have antique car shows and a huge Christmas parade—everything happens in The Square.”
Education and manufacturing
Troy is a college town, and the education and retail services that support the community and its students are major industry sectors here. Manufacturing and information services are also important. “Many of our manufacturers are highly recruiting outside of Troy, and it’s bringing many people into Troy right now,” Langford says.
Troy offers older homes and contemporary subdivisions
The median sale price in Troy is $280,000, a little more than half the national number. Most of the community’s housing comprises older homes built between the mid-to-late 20th century. As the city expands from its center, subdivisions with contemporary homes are available. “There’s a lot of new construction happening right now,” Langford says. “Stone Martin and DR Horton are two builders developing hundreds of homes just outside town to accommodate all the newcomers.” Close to campus are apartments for student housing, with an average rent price of $600 per month.
