Convenient shopping, highly rated schools and giant pumpkin boats
Tualatin is a city of about 27,000, with highly rated schools, some with championship-merit athletics, convenient, centralized shopping and a light-hearted, suburban culture south of Portland. Local kayakers and canoers glide down Tualatin’s namesake river, which wraps around the city. But every Autumn, residents hollow out record-sized pumpkins which they race across Tualatin Lake as part of the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta.
Part of the metro area’s “Silicon Forest,” Tualatin’s largest industry is information technology, with an annual estimated output of $558 million. Lam Research, which manufactures semiconductors that power various technologies, is the city’s biggest employer, and one of the largest in the greater region. The Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center is another local employment hub, and the city is also home to several manufacturing companies.

Flat, walkable landscape and post-midcentury builds
Most Tualatin homes were constructed after the midcentury. Split-level and ranch-style homes from the 1970s comprise the city’s older neighborhoods, while new traditional houses built after 1990 often come with Craftsman touches, including a handful of new constructions. Sidewalks and flat terrain make Tualatin neighborhoods easily navigable on foot. “It’s a really flat area,” says Alexander Phan, a realtor with Keller Williams Realty Professionals. “Because of how flat it is, residents don’t have to drive through big hills, and the walkability is nice.”
The median home sales price in Tualatin is about $632,000, higher than many of the surrounding areas. The median price across the surrounding Washington County, which also includes Beaverton, Hillsboro, Sherwood and Tigard, is just shy of $600,000, while the median in Portland is almost $100,000 less than that of Tualatin.

International Baccalaureate scores at the high school place among the highest in the nation, and the Tualatin Timberwolves have won 28 state championships and two national championships.

Tualatin grew with Bridgeport Village mall
Shopping and dining in Tualatin are mostly concentrated around Interstate 5. The Nyberg Woods and the Nyberg River shopping centers sit across from each other, separated by the interstate, with staples like Cabela’s and New Seasons Market along them. Tualatin Commons, a shopping plaza with a hotel, self-care businesses and several restaurants surrounding a 3-acre lake, is also nearby.
The highlight of the Tualatin shopping scene may be Bridgeport Village, which includes a Saks OFF 5th, an Apple store and a Whole Foods. “Tualatin really grew when they developed the Bridgeport Village,” Phan says. “It became a hub for Tualatin, and one of the things people enjoy the most about the area.”

The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta
People in costumes racing down a lake in giant, hollow pumpkins is not a rare sight for residents of Tualatin come October. Every fall since 2004, pumpkin growers, race sponsors and members of Tualatin Police, Fire and Rescue — along with a few lucky lottery winners — paddle as fast as they can in record-size gourds across the lake at Tualatin Commons as part of the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta. After a pumpkin weigh-off, attendees compete in pumpkin bowling, pumpkin golf and other pumpkin-centered sports before refueling with local food trucks. Face painting, costume contests and craft tents keep younger attendees entertained.
Easy park access for Tualatin residents
Tualatin has several green spaces with access to its namesake river. In the north end of the city, Jurgens Park has multiple athletic fields, courts, a dog park and a dock on the banks of the Tualatin River. The river snakes through the Tualatin Community Park. The Tualatin River Greenway Trail links the two parks together, allowing residents to soak in vibrant Oregon greenery in a safe and easy way. There's also the membership-only Tualatin Country Club nearby.
