Desert suburbia by the Tucson Mountains
Set by the Tucson Mountains to the west, the Enchanted Hills neighborhood offers desert suburbia near parks, shopping and dining about 4 miles from downtown Tucson. “It has all the amenities nearby,” says Gene Thiel, a Realtor with Long Realty Company and over 40 years of experience. “It’s not far from the freeway, so you have access to town—that’s desirable.” There’s also public transportation in the neighborhood, and many homes are walkable to Oyama Elementary and Kennedy Park. “There’s singles, small families, dog families—it’s a pretty nice mix of everything. I really do love the community around here,” says Jurithzy Berrelleza, a leasing consultant at the neighborhood’s San Mateo Apartments.
Ranch-style homes with desert landscaping in Enchanted Hills
Enchanted Hills’ ranch-style homes, built in the late 20th century, are set along sidewalk-lined streets peppered with mailboxes and palm trees; many have red brick or sun-bleached stucco exteriors. These two- to four-bedroom homes generally have layouts of 800 to 1,500 square feet on 2,000 to 5,000-square-foot desert-landscaped lots, some dotted by Saguaro and prickly pear cacti. Stone, brick or chain-link fencing around property lines is typical, and many homes feature attached carports and patios or porches. Prices for these homes typically range from $150,000 to $300,000, depending on a home’s size and features. The neighborhood is evenly split between renters and owners; lower-priced homes are opportunities for investors looking to rent. There are also a handful of apartment buildings in the neighborhood, including San Mateo Apartments, where residents share access to a pool and fitness center.
Career and technical education courses at Cholla High
Enchanted Hills is part of the Tucson Unified School District, rated B overall by Niche. Local kids can start at the C-plus-rated Oyama Elementary, before moving on to the C-minus-rated Valencia Middle. Teens may attend the B-minus-rated Cholla High, which offers career and technical education courses in subjects like graphic design, sports medicine and early childhood.
Getting around from Enchanted Hills
Interstate 10 is about 2 miles away, leading 117 miles to Phoenix. Downtown Tucson’s about 4 miles away via South Mission Road, a local thoroughfare. Sun Tran buses stop in the neighborhood, and streets here are bikeable and pedestrian-friendly, so locals aren’t car-dependent. “It’s easy-peasy to get around,” Berrelleza says. St. Mary’s Hospital is 4 miles away, and Tucson International Airport is 9 miles away.
Walk to John F. Kennedy Park
Just west of the neighborhood, Enchanted Hills Trail Park is a dirt-packed trail system for hikers, bikers and horseback riders that leads through the Tucson Mountains’ foothills. “If you’re looking for hiking, there’s hiking all around there,” Thiel says. The 160-acre John F. Kennedy Park is walkable from many of the neighborhood’s homes, convenient for a weekend visit to the playground or a pick-up game of soccer, tennis or sand volleyball. “There’s a lot of dog walking over there, cycling too—really nice views to enjoy outside with a picnic,” Berrelleza says. The park’s also popular for its fishing lake, where locals may cast their lines for catfish and sunfish, and its community pool, an oasis in the summer when temperatures here top 100 degrees. Two miles away, Santa Cruz River Park offers access to The Loop, a 130-mile shared-use path that connects several of Tucson’s parks and is especially popular with cyclists.
Shopping and dining at nearby Park View
Enchanted Hills is primarily residential, but residents can find shopping and dining within a mile or two of their homes. Linda’s Meat Market is just outside the neighborhood, a locally owned butcher shop and grocer stocked with daily essentials, as well as homemade tortillas and Mexican snacks. A mile away, Park View, a retail plaza, is the spot to grab groceries from Food City, dine on fast food and pop into small businesses, like Adrian’s by Angel Barbershop and Nails Aqui. There’s also the locally owned Bamboo Terrace, an area staple for over 30 years serving casual Chinese fare, like sweet and sour pork and shrimp fried rice. For an evening out, The Original Hideout has been serving beer on tap and comfort fare since 1952 in a laidback, no-frills setting with occasional live music and DJ sets.
Annual celebrations at Kennedy Park
“Kennedy Park’s got a lot of activities going on all the time there—holiday celebrations, musicians and festivals,” Thiel says. In April, residents may attend the annual Pueblos Del Maíz Festival, which celebrates corn's cultural significance with music, crafts and everything from corn tortilla tacos to popcorn. October’s Blues Heritage Festival is another highlight for all-day live music with food and drink from local vendors. Less than a mile away, the Old Pueblo Archaeology Center is a nonprofit offering tours of historical sites, like Los Morteros, a Hohokam site 20 miles away that dates back to the 9th century and includes ancient petroglyphs.
