A home for university students, faculty and staff
Two miles north of the University of Arizona’s central campus and 4 miles outside Downtown Tucson is a neighborhood known as Hedrick Acres. Here, condominium communities are built in the adobe style, vibrant business corridors are a short drive — or even a walk — away and the region’s miles of hiking trails are easily accessible past Interstate 10 along West Grant Road. According to Nicole Brule-Fisher with RE/MAX Professionals, a Tuscon native who’s worked in real estate for over 20 years, U of A’s influence can be strongly felt throughout the city and its surrounding bedroom communities, including Hedrick Acres. “The University is really the nexus of our community…The campus is huge and one of our largest employers,” she says, adding, “Even with a metropolitan area of just over 1 million people, we’re still a university town.” Hedrick Acres’ relative affordability when compared to Downtown Tucson makes it a desirable location for students and faculty alike, and the park-and-ride lot next to Navajo Wash Park makes for an easy commute.

Adobe-style condominiums and single-family ranch-styles
In Hedrick Acres, prospective buyers will find adobe-style condominium communities dating back to the 1980s. Units in The Casa Club Condominium Complex, for instance, hover between $100,000 and $150,000 depending on bedroom count and square footage. Residents are charged monthly HOA fees and have access to amenities like swimming pools, racquetball courts and volleyball. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, single-family ranch-style homes built in the 1950s fall between $250,000 and $400,000. Most have stucco or brick exteriors, and attached garages are few and far between. Cars park outside on gravel driveways underneath the shadow of Saguaro Cacti and Palo Vere trees.

Hedrick Acres students can attend schools within the Amphitheater Unified District where Frances Owen Holaway Elementary, Amphitheater Middle and Amphitheater High received a B-minus, C-and C-plus from the educational review site Niche, respectively. Amphitheater High School (aka Amphi High) prepares ninth and 10th-grade students for advanced placement classes through the Cambridge Academy, modeled after the University of Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum. The school also offers a dual enrollment program with the help of Pima Community College and the University of Arizona; they can receive simultaneous high school and college credit in everything from American Sign Language to nursing.

Local eateries along the neighborhood's four main borders
Hedrick Acres is almost entirely residential, with retailers and restaurants lining its four borders: East Glenn Street, North 1st Avenue, East Fort Lowell Road and North Campbell Avenue. Local favorites include Taqueria El Pueblito and Nico’s, both of which serve up classic Southwestern fare like chimichangas, carne asada and fish tacos on North Campbell. Nearby is Beyond Bread, a Tucson-area chain where residents can pick up scratch-made pies, deli sandwiches and oven-fresh sourdough. To check items off the grocery list, head to Albertson’s in Campbell Plaza. There’s an Ace Hardware next door along with India Dukaan, a food supplier that ships in fresh produce along with beauty products from India. Of course, there are always more options in Downtown Tucson to the South. “Tucson is the first City of Gastronomy designated in the United States,” says Brule-Fishe, going on to add, “Our foodie culture is incredibly rich and deep...” Today, many local restaurants still honor the Mexican and Native American flavors developed in the region over 4,000 years ago.

Lovers of live music and theater can head to the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, formerly known as the Tucson Music Hall, where the Arizona Opera performs. The city is also home to an art museum with an impressive collection of indigenous work, a children’s museum and even a transportation museum. Here, locals can learn about the history of Tucson’s railroad or visit Steam Locomotive #1673, an early 1900s locomotive that had a cameo in the 1955 movie “Oklahoma.” Farther west in Tucson Mountain Park, families can stop by Old Tucson, a modern-day amusement park that once served as a film set during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
