Wakefield
Southwestern homes with quirky decor
Homes along Wakefield’s streets include ranch-style houses, Craftsman bungalows and the Spanish- and Pueblo-influenced builds common across the region. Some properties feature arched porticos and quirky decor like mailboxes placed atop a wagon wheel and drill bit. Gates attached to fencing made out of brick, concrete or wired mesh afford many homeowners added privacy. Some lots offer enough room for multiple vehicles, while some cars are parked on dirt sidewalks. With most of their footprints running between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet, single-family home costs mainly go from about $150,000 to $300,000.The neighborhood also has CAP Index Crime Scores of 8 out of 10 and above on a few violent and property crime categories. Those figures are above national averages of 4 for those categories.
Several options for Sonoran-style cuisine
Neighborhood staples include Tacos Apson, which is easy to spot with its music-themed sign. The Mariscos To Go food truck serves seafood from a dirt lot off South Sixth Avenue, while Little Mexico has been a community favorite for years. Richard Martinez, who does sales at the nearby QED Electric store, is particularly a fan of Little Mexico’s red chili. “And then just the overall atmosphere. They always take care of you, and there’s a lot of people that have been working there for many years. The service is great,” he says.El Super and Food City are the nearest grocery stores, while the nearby commercial corridor around I-19 has numerous chains like Target and Best Buy.
Access to Lapan College Club
The neighborhood shares its name with Wakefield Middle School, which gets a B from Niche. The Hollinger K-8 School is the other neighborhood school and gets a C from Niche. Students may also attend C.E. Rose PreK-8, which receives a C-minus. Afterward, students may finish their public education at Pueblo High School, which gets a B-minus from Niche. Those schools each offer a unique program called the Lapan College Club, which essentially rewards students with money for college or trade school. The rewards are based on students’ grades and overall performance through the years.Bike trips on the Julian Wash Greenway and Rodeo Wash Path
Two trails run across Wakefield: The Julian Wash and the Rodeo Wash greenways. The trails accommodate avid bikers, joggers and daily walkers while offering views of the Sonoran landscape and vegetation. The Julian Wash connects to the greater Chuck Huckelberry Loop, a more than 130-mile network in the Tucson area. The Julian Wash also goes to Santa Cruz River Park, a vast multi-use space a few blocks west of Wakefield. The park draws horseback riders, dog owners and other nature lovers looking to spot desert wildlife. The Rodeo Wash Greenway also goes through a park of the same name. Rodeo Wash Park’s amenities include a basketball court.Bordering grounds of the Tucson Rodeo
Wakefield borders the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, the 36-acre home of La Fiesta de los Vaqueros — also known locally as the Tucson Rodeo. Many deck themselves in Western attire during the multi-day February event to watch activities like bull and bronc riding, cattle roping and barrel racing. During one of the nights, they can also dance to the tunes of live country music.Right off the interstates 19 and 10
Numerous Sun Tran bus stops exist in Wakefield. South Sixth Avenue goes straight to downtown Tucson, about 3 miles north. The neighborhood sits right off where I-19 and I-10 merge. “The big key component there is I-19 leads to the Mexico border at Nogales. You have a huge population of travelers who come in from the border to go shopping,” Baker says, adding that visitors often shop in this part of town. The neighborhood is only a few minutes north of the Tucson International Airport, the region’s hub for commercial flights. Banner - University Medical Center South offers the nearest hospital institution.
