Small, different and cute
Most homes in Fair Heights are small brick or wood-framed bungalows built in the 1930s and ’40s. “Homebuyers attracted to the neighborhood aren’t looking for big new construction,” Beaubien says. “These homes are two to three bedrooms, and each is different and cute. People take pride in their homes here. Many have lived in Fair Heights a long time and know their neighbors, which makes them feel safe.” In fact, Fair Heights has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3, under the national average of 4. Front porches, carports and garages, and deep backyards are just a few other features of these homes, which typically list for between $125,000 and $280,000.
City parks nearby
While Fair Heights is strictly residential, Braden Park is less than a mile northeast and offers a pond with ducks, walking paths and benches. The central playground is next to a shelter with picnic tables, and the large field adjacent can be used for sports or sunbathing. Two tennis courts, which double as pickleball courts, are on the far side. Turner Park, also less than a mile away, is north of the neighborhood, with trees, lawns, walking paths, play structures and picnic shelters.
Schools that emphasize careers
The schools that serve Fair Heights include Kendall-Whittier Elementary, which received a C-minus from Niche and offers a two-way dual language program in English and Spanish. Hale Middle also scored a C-minus and provides career tech learning opportunities for students interested in robotics, building mobile apps and designing in 3-D. At Nathan Hale High, a C school, college and career pathways are vital to student success. Students graduate ready to serve through education, the workforce or public service.
State fair and football
The Tulsa State Fair is the city’s largest family event, held for 11 days starting the fourth Thursday after Labor Day at the Tulsa Expo Center, adjacent to Fair Heights. With agricultural exhibits, live music, kiddie rides, food, shopping, and daily entertainment, the fair offers something for everyone. Another big neighborhood event is whenever the University of Tulsa plays football. “The area becomes one big tailgating party, and there’s free food and bands,” Beaubien says. “The stadium is on 11th Street, so most people just walk over.”
Getting around Tulsa
Metrolink buses travel along 11th, Harvard, and Yale Streets, connecting residents to downtown and other parts of Tulsa. The city also offers a nonprofit bike-sharing program called This Machine, with over 200 bikes and 45 stations citywide. Downtown Tulsa is 5 miles away, Tulsa International Airport is a 6-mile drive, and Oklahoma City is over 100 miles on Interstate 44.Mother Road to hot chicken
A hip place to meet friends and hang out is Mother Road Market at the corner of 11th and Lewis, over a mile west of the neighborhood. Named after historic Route 66 (also known as “Mother Road”), this food hall brings together startup eateries in one warehouse-like space. Closer to home, residents can shop at Target, Reasor’s grocery or Lowe’s next to Expo Square. Eleventh Street is also lined with restaurants, including Tally’s Good Food Café, with its retro-diner decor, or Chicken and the Wolf, featuring Nashville hot chicken. “The restaurant started as a food truck and now has three locations in Tulsa,” Beaubien says.
Hillcrest Medical Center
The closest medical center is Hillcrest on 11th Street going downtown, less than 3 miles from the neighborhood. This 620-bed hospital features a regional burn unit, a women’s health center, an orthopedic hospital, a cancer center and a heart institute.
