A taste of Tulsa history west of the river

In Westside, Tulsa’s history as the “Oil Capital of the World” is on prominent display. The Holly Frontier oil refinery takes up broad swaths of real estate on both sides of Interstate 244 and Route 66, which run through the center of the neighborhood. The Arkansas River curls around the northern and eastern borders, creating a natural barrier between Riverview and the downtown districts. “It’s about 10 minutes to downtown, to the Gathering Place, to Tulsa Hills. We call it the best-kept secret,” says Kerri Bristow, broker associate with EXP Realty. Westside is also home to the Route 66 Historical Village, an open-air museum celebrating the city’s history and connections to the oil and transportation industries.

From Westside to Riverview

Interstate 244 runs parallel to the river, as does US Route 66, which transforms into Southwest Boulevard on its journey through Westside. The Southwest Boulevard Bridge offers pedestrian access, so it’s possible to get to Riverview on foot. It takes about 10 minutes to make the 6-mile drive to downtown Tulsa and 15 minutes to drive to the airport. Folks who live in the residential area can take advantage of the MetroLink Tulsa buses that stop along Southwest Boulevard.

Residential streets in the curve of the river

Oil refineries, manufacturing facilities and freight railroad tracks dominate the landscape that stretches west of I-244. But on the eastern side of the highway, a pocket of residential streets sits tucked along the riverside. Neat rows of ranch-style homes and bungalows from the 1960s and ’70s sit back from the narrow roads, bordered by patches of lawn and paved sidewalks. Prices start at $75,000 for a small fixer-upper and climb to around $200,000 for a 3-bedroom ranch house. While the streets in this area are reasonably pedestrian-friendly, a section of Route 66 passes through the neighborhood, intensifying traffic in that section of town.

Eugene Field Elementary

Educators focus strongly on socioemotional development at Eugene Field Elementary, where most Westside students start their academic journeys. Some kids might attend Clinton West Elementary School instead, depending on where they live in Westside. After that comes Daniel Webster Middle and High Schools, both of which are south of the neighborhood near the crossroads of the Okmulgee and Red Fork Expressways. All these schools get a C-minus from Niche. Medical students can pursue their degrees at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences on West 17th Street.

Skillets, spareribs and shops on Southwest Boulevard

Locals start their days off right with “eggsquisite” skillets or butter pecan pancakes from Apple Barrel Café, which also serves classic sandwiches at lunchtime. Farther south, barbecue lovers indulge their cravings at Billy Ray’s Catfish & BBQ. Diners can choose between spare or baby back ribs, chopped or sliced brisket, burnt ends or fried catfish filets with hush puppies. A short drive down Route 66 leads to Ollie's Station, serving homestyle favorites from a red-roofed building that doubles as a railroad museum. The Mexican specialties at nearby TamaleBoyz fulfill more exotic cravings. Crystal City Shopping Center features a pharmacy, a florist, a Family Dollar and Route 66 Save More Food Market. On West 21st Street, Sooner Surplus sells groceries and essentials such as clothing, auto parts, hardware and building supplies.

Celebration in the park

In the center of the residential area, Celebration Park beckons with its multi-use sports court, picnic pavilion and grills, garden-themed play area, splash pad and open green space. The park used to serve as an overflow parking area for River West Festival Park during Oktoberfest, but a recent upgrade transformed it into an inviting destination. Runners and walkers take advantage of the River Parks West Trail that threads along the banks of the Arkansas, and the city is creating a dam system to make the river more accessible to kayakers.

Oktoberfest at River West Festival Park

One of the largest and most jubilant Oktoberfest celebrations outside of Munich arrives at River West Festival Park every autumn. The four-day event has enlivened the shores of the Arkansas River for 45 years, delighting revelers with live music, arts and crafts celebrations, and German cuisine. Over 200 types of German and local beer pour from the taps to wash down all the bratwurst, wiener schnitzel and strudel. Festivities typically begin on Thursday and continue through the weekend, with a few private pre-fest events scheduled earlier in the week.

Crime

The CAP Index gives Westside a crime score of 5, a notch higher than the national average of 4. The median household income for the neighborhood is $24,000, nearly one-third of the national average. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, crime risk is heightened in low-income communities, with the threat of property-related crime standing out as a particular concern. It’s worth noting, however, that Westside’s CAP Index score is still significantly lower than the one for downtown Tulsa.
