Yorktown reflects Tulsa's post-World War I boom
American World War I commander General John J. Pershing helped break ground for Tulsa’s St. John Hospital in 1920 -- and it wasn’t long before an entire neighborhood sprung up around the medical center, which finally opened four years later. The houses in the historic Yorktown neighborhood remain a time capsule harkening to Tulsa’s most explosive period of growth. Nearly 95% of homes here were built prior to 1931, which helps explain why the Yorktown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. “People who want those homes are looking for that classic experience,” says Jack Wallace, a Realtor with Chinowith & Cohen.

Where Tulsa's Twenties are still roaring
Except for Ascension St. John Medical Center, Yorktown is an entirely residential subdivision in Tulsa’s Midtown area. While the interiors of these homes are renovated to suit modern life, their architecture is a reflection of life from 1921-31. “It's been well maintained,” Wallace said. “People take pride in that area.” Craftsman bungalows are the dominant style throughout Yorktown. Newer homes in the neighborhood – which in this case means built closer to 1930 – tend to be Tudor Revivals. Taken as a whole, the neighborhood is an example of a significant era in American history – a time when home ownership became widely accessible to the middle class. The neighborhood still has that spirit about it. “It’s a nice pocket where you can still get somewhat of a value on a home,” Wallace said. Homes range from $165,000-$505,000 with a median value of $382,500.

Walkable to Utica Square and Cherry Street
Utica Square Mall, an outdoor shopping center that’s been a staple here since the 1950s, is home to high-end retail and dining options, including Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. There are also more budget-friendly choices like Queenies, a popular spot for breakfast and lunch. “There’s a line out the door every single day,” Wallace said of the Midtown staple. A wide array of dining options in the Cherry Street neighborhood is also close by. From a morning brew at The Coffee House on Cherry Street or Summer Moon Coffee, to meals at Roka Asian Fusion or Nola’s Creole & Cocktails, to a nightcap at Kilkenny’s Irish Pub or Roosevelt’s, Cherry Street doesn’t lack for choices.
