A Tupelo neighborhood on the rise
Cooper Miller came back. Miller grew up in Tupelo but went to Atlanta to study at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. There, he discovered what big-city dining meant. After starting a family, Miller moved to Gravlee to be closer to relatives, but he retained his love for upscale food. While walking his dog at night, he would stare at a neighborhood restaurant called ForkLift and dream of what he could help it become. Six years ago, he bought it, and he now works as its head chef. “We try to bring a big-city restaurant feel to the town, but we’re super casual,” Miller says. “You can wear shorts and golf shirt with the boys.” ForkLift’s menu and Miller’s big-city vision align with the rise of Gravlee and other Tupelo neighborhoods near the city’s center. It may not be Atlanta, but the area has several parks and attractions to keep residents entertained, and its students can attend highly rated schools.
Gravley homes are situated on modest lots, providing ample space for children to run and play.

The neighborhood is full of cottages with Colonial Revival and French Country influences. These homes usually range from $250,000 to $375,000 and can come with long driveways and carports. Jackson Street, the community’s northern border, can get crowded at rush hour, Miller says. The neighborhood’s main roads have sidewalks, which people often use to get to restaurants and parks, according to Wesley Webb Real Estate agent John Brady. A mix of tall and short trees pepper the front lawns.

The Mall at Barnes Crossing is full of retail stores
ForkLift changes its menu about three times a year, Miller says, cutting half of it and adding new dishes. Some items, like the dry-aged ribeye, will never go away. Romie’s Grocery serves Southern cuisine while customers are surrounded by wood and brick decor. Strange Brew Coffeehouse has distinct flavors, which customers can purchase inside or in a drive-through lane. Nearby, Danver’s serves classic American entrees alongside a salad bar, and customers can sit on padded barrels instead of chairs. Reed’s, a regional department store, and Kroger are close by. The Mall at Barnes Crossing, which averages 12 million shoppers per year visiting its more than 100 stores, is less than a 5-mile drive.
