A Tupelo community that comes together in times of need
After a tornado hit Tupelo in 2014, the Joyner neighborhood was hurting. There were no casualties in the neighborhood, but buildings were damaged and about half of the neighborhood’s tree canopy was destroyed. Hope, however, remained. “When you have a disaster like that, it has a tendency to bring out the best in people,” says Leslie Mart, the president-elect of the Joyner Neighborhood Association. “We saw that within our neighbors.” Within a week, the neighborhood association’s Facebook page ballooned from about 175 members to around 1,500. The page was an essential source of information, signaling who needed help and who was available to do so. In the years since, the community has rebuilt, with an emphasis on making Joyner as picturesque as it was before the tornado. It even earned a nickname: the Joyner Garden District. Mart says the people in the community, as well as its amenities and location near the city’s downtown, make the neighborhood a special place.

Colonial Revival cottages and wide roads fit for walking
Midcentury Colonial Revival homes and cottages are common in the neighborhood. These homes can range from $350,000 to $550,000. Some ranch-style homes are also available, usually for $175,000 to $275,000. Though most neighborhood streets do not have sidewalks, roads are wide enough for people to walk to a park or to local restaurants, and Mart says residents take advantage of that convenient access. Trees of various sizes sit on front lawns, as do forsythia plants, which Mart says residents have nicknamed the “Joyner bush.” The Joyner Neighborhood Association is not a homeowners association, so it is voluntary to join and open to renters.
